Project Summary

For using excess amount of wind energy available on highways we will be designing vertical axis wind turbine and it has advantage over simple type of turbine because it can collect wind from all directions and be utilized for wind energy production. We will be making a prototype of vertical axis wind turbine whose output will be 50 W. Will be using arduino for the stop and start of wind turbine and wind cutting speed will be taken at which the turbine starts to work and at which wind speed the turbine stops to rotate so that it cannot get damaged. LEDs will be used for showing the parameters going in the battery and then to the inverter and we will be monitoring them.

Project Objectives

World is striving for renewable energy resources. In this project we aim to harvest 100% renewable and cheap energy through wind produced by traffic on highways. A lot of energy is lost in the form of wind on highways, we will be using that wind for producing necessary energy for fulfilling our basic energy needs. So for this we will be making vertical axis wind turbine that will work irespective of the wind direction and will produce energy that will be utilized for street lights at a smaller scale. 

Project Implementation Method

  1. Vertical axis wind turbine

We are making a prototype of vertical axis wind turbine whose output will be 50 W. Will be using arduino for the stop and start of wind turbine and wind cutting speed will be taken at which the turbine starts to work and at which wind speed the turbine stops to rotate so that it cannot get damaged. LEDs will be used for showing the parameters going in the battery and then to the inverter and we will be monitoring them.   1. DC Generator

A Dc generator is an electrical machine which converts mechanical energy into direct current electricity. This energy conversion is based on the principle of production of dynamically induced emf. Theoretically, a DC generator can be used as a DC motor without any constructional changes and vice versa is also possible. Thus, a DC generator or a DC motor can be broadly termed as a DC machine. It will be used for production of energy from vertical axis wind turbine.

  1. Control Circuit

We are using control circuit in which arduino is used for stop and start of vertical axis wind turbine at given speeds and LED’s are used at inverter and battery level for monitoring of parameters.

  1. Buck-Boost Convertors

Buck convertor is used when voltage level is greater than 12 V coming from DC generator and Boost convertor is used when voltage level is less than 12 V coming from DC generator and going into battery and this whole is monitored by control circuit.

  1. Battery

Battery is used for storage of energy from DC generator at 12 V and convertors and DC filters are used for voltage regulation.

  1. Inverter

An inverter converts the DC voltage to an AC voltage. An inverter provides an ac voltage from dc power sources and is useful in powering electronics and electrical equipment rated at the ac mains voltage. In addition they are widely used in the switched mode power supplies inverting stages. The circuits are classified according the switching technology and switch type, the waveform, the frequency and output waveform.

  1. AC and DC loads

AC and DC loads are used for utilization of energy produced from vertical axis wind turbine. Energy from battery is directly employed by dc loads and for ac loads inverter is used.

Benefits of the Project

We are makin a prototype setup of undirectional wind turbine.These turbines have fewer parts than those that orient the rotary mechanism and blades horizontally. That means fewer components to wear out and break down. Also, the supporting strength of the tower doesn’t need to be as much, because the gearbox and generator are near the ground. Parts for controlling pitch and yaw aren’t needed either.The turbine doesn’t have to be facing the right wind direction either. In a vertical system, air flowing from any direction or speed can rotate the blades. Therefore, the system can be used to generate power in gusty winds and when they’re blowing steadily.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The VAWT is designed and fabricated in such a way that the it can able to capture wind from all the direction, power developed from the project is 50W for a speed of 6.1m/s, the efficiency of VAWT can be increase by changing the size and shape of the blade, the theoretical and experimental result is varying because in theoretical calculation we consider the wind is hitting all the eight turbine blades, practically it is not.

Our work and the results obtained are very encouraged that vertical axis wind energy conversion are plausible and potentially very contribute to the production of the clean renewable electricity from the wind even under low ideal sitting conditions. With the idea on highway, it will power up street lights. In most cities, highways are a faster route for daily commute and in need of constant light makes this a very efficient way to produce natural energy.
