Project Title

Retinopathy based Diabetes Analyzer (RDA)

Project Area of Specialization

Wearables and Implantable

Project Summary

The diabetic patients suffer from many attached diseases including disorders in clots and veins of eye retina. The disease grows silently and bad effects are felt when its severety level is much higher or even not treatable at that time. We propose to develop an android application to take image of eye retina and detect the disorder if any. Our application takes the fundus image of eye retina as input taken using ophthalmoscope. The application can be used frequently without any harm on eyes. Our system is divided in two modules as follws; i) Clot detection and ii) Abnormal Vein Growth detection. We shall also generate the reports and analyze the level of disease and precautionary measures as well.

Project Objectives

Identify the clots in an efficient manner in a user friendly way that a common person can use it.

Analyse the level of disease to timely identify and cure the disorders.

Provide a helping guide for preventive measures

Identify the abnormal growth of veins to further strenghten the resulting reports and related treatments

Project Implementation Method

Our software detects these spots using image processing which compare the affected picture with a sample. We shall use 20D lens and ophthalmoscope for capturing clear image of tiny vessels behind the retina of a normal eye. The application takes the image and red clots in the eye retina image will be detected through the KNN (the nearest neighbor algorithm) along with K-mean clustering. It also identifies the position of clot by evaluating indices. The application is getting the height and width from the bitmap object. The pixel image is stored in an array, the size of an array depends on the height and width of the picture. The application will then detect the entire clots using color intensity between 128 to 160 for red color varied for a clot.  The system will detect some other features in the image such as the distance between the clots. After detecting the clot, the system will highlight the clot and will display its location in rows and columns.

In second module, the vein detection is done by canny edge algorithm, which will first convert the image into greyscale, will blur the image and then performs edge detection. The system converts the image to greyscale by setting the saturation of image to zero. It will then apply three more filters to the image, the blur image, Sobel Operator, Non maximum suppression and thresholds. By these filters the fundus image will be converted to canny edge image, which will only show the edges in the images. After converting the image to canny edge, it will highlight the abnormal growth of veins in the retina. Finally, the abnormal growth of veins will be shown by drawing lines on it. Our software can also generate the percentage or level of disease by analyzing the number of neighboring clustered pixels of a clot. It also identifies the multiple clots at different location of the fundus eye retina image.

Benefits of the Project

The basic feature of our project is that it is mobile based and easy to use by common persons to avoid a seriuos disease before time.

It also maintains a history of existing readings and reports to be used in future for comparison.

Abnormal growth of veins identification is alos beneficial to identify other blockages in veins.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Proposed system is an Android Application that gives a time relief and accuracy to the diabetes patients in crucial situations. The application will maintain a regular record of evaluating the eye retina state by easily testing. The application allows to monitor the level of disease and take preventive measures as well provided by our application. In case of rapid clots detection or vein disorder, the patient can be treated or operated timely when the disease is at initial stage. This disease cause not very severe effects even at second or third levels and symptoms are irretating only when the disease is grown and mostly very difficult or impossible to cure or treat. Our deliverd application will be a great benefit for all community especially the diabetic ones.

The application will also generate a report in an image and PDF format that can be shared on email oe social media.
