Reconfigurable Processor
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryIn present era, System on Chip is growing and scaling tremendously. They are typically used in mobile computing such as tablets, smartphones, smart watches and netbooks as well as embedded system. They are replacing microcontrollers. Reconfigurable computing is considered as an effective solution to combine the high flexibility of traditional processors with the high processing efficiency of ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). The main reason is that reconfigurable architecture can meet the requirements of different processing tasks, through the different granularity parallelism for different applications by using its reconfigurable devices. FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is the most widely used reconfigurable devices for its dynamically scalable reconfiguration, which is the important support to implement the hardware level multitasking. Leon3 core from Gaisler is a kind of SPARC-V8 fully compatible processor, and it is the successor of the ERC32 and LEON2 processors developed for the European Space Agency (ESA). The ERC32 and LEON2 devices are currently widely used in European and international space programs, and the reliability of Leon3 has been verified. We will mainly discuss the SOC on-board computer design based on Leon3 processor core, and the methods to improve the reliability of the system to make it reliable for our application. The major milestone of this project are;
i- Design a reconfigurable processor
ii- Test an application on it.
The project will be simulation based and functional verification of proposed processor will be done using Xilinx ISE, Vivado and Modelsim.
Project ObjectivesThe major objectives of this project are;
i- Design a reconfigurable processor
ii- Test an application on it.
Project Implementation MethodLeon3 core from Gaisler is a kind of SPARC-V8 fully compatible processor, and it is the successor of the ERC32 and LEON2 processors developed for the European Space Agency (ESA).
- We are using this Gaisler cores to design and simulate Leon3 processor.
- Next we will add an application on it written in c code.
- Then we will mount this architecture on FPGA to check it.
The principal benefits of reconfigurable computing are the ability to execute larger hardware designs with fewer gates and to realize the flexibility of a software-based solution while retaining the execution speed of a more traditional, hardware-based approach. This makes doing more with less a reality. We can implement embedded systems by using our desing.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe major deliverable of this project are;
i- Design a reconfigurable processor
ii- Test an application on it.
