Project Summary

Vehicles, specially cars, play a vital role in our everyday life. They transport people from one place to another. We spend a large portion of our time inside our cars. Every day Americans drive about 25 miles and spend an average of one hour behind the wheel. In order to make the drivers and passengers traveling time more entertaining, the automobile industry is incorporating different technologies and features in the vehicles. One of the most important feature is car security. Nowadays a plenty of car security and anti-theft systems are available. Some of these systems are: alarm based security system, car tracker system, door lock system, steering locker, wheel lock, kill switch, car tracker, and Android-based security applications and so on. Most of existing car security solutions focused on car external security. One of the main drawback of such solution is that once a thief get access to car (by breaking the external security), he can easily drive the car.

To address the above mentioned problem, we will design and implement a new hybrid security system which would focus on car internal security. We will use off-the-shelves and low cost hardware to build our system. Our system would make use of Raspberry PI device, GSM module, LCD screen finger-print device, and alarm.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to enhance internal seruciry of vehicle by low cost solution. 

Project Implementation Method

Hardware: GSM module, Raspberry Pi device, Buttons and wires, Small LCD screen, and Fingerprint device

Details of some of the components are as under:

Raspberry Pi:

Raspberry Pi is a low cost, small size, single board computer which has the capability to interact with the outside world. It has Wi-Fi built in module and has support for several other communication standards. The latest version of Raspberry Pi has more advance features and is powered by a Quad Core Broad-com BCM2837 64bit ARMv8 processor.

Fingerprint Device

Fingerprint is a form of biometric authentication system. They are used in wide variety of security related applications. In our project we will use this device to authenticate the driver owner to the car.

Alarm device

The main function of alarm device is to generate a sound, after receiving a signal from raspberry pi device.

GSM Module

The main functionality of this module is to send a small text based message to the car owner mobile, in case of any suspicious activity occurred inside the car.

Car gates buttons

These buttons would give inputs to the raspberry pi device.

Benefits of the Project

As thieves are becoming smart, hence there is a need to make our vehicles smarter. We also get motivation from flaws found in existing car security systems. For example, a thief can easily disable the car alarm and break the mirror to enter into the car and start the engine with bogus keys or by taking direct current from the battery. Cars manufacturers have great interest to incorporate a reliable security system into cars which could be unbreakable by thieves or intruders.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

At the end of this project, a working prototype of the system would be developed. Additionally we will test the prototype in real world scenario, inside the vehicle.
