The number of vehicles has increased with the demand of population over the years, thereby has caused congestion and heavy traffic on roads, which is a grave issue to be dealt with utmost care by taking measures to save the lives of victims. With the climate change such as heavy rains and snow, damaged pavements like potholes are increasing, and thus complaints and lawsuits of accidents related to potholes are growing.
In order to provide assistance to the driver, an automated system has introduced, that aims to detect potholes and collision and alert the driver in real-time to take necessary measures. The system has a module DDR (Driving Data Recorder) which keeps record of the speed and brakes applied while driving. This can be used to prove who was at fault in an accident. The system consists of distance sensors, camera, microcontroller and an application for user which will alarm him with respect to a certain situation and record necessary data. The camera on a vehicle collects potholes data, and the collected data is sent to a pothole detection algorithm. Also, the pothole information such as the location of pothole will be marked on google maps using GPS. It will monitor the distance of user’s vehicle from other vehicles or objects using sensors and using the microcontroller and Wi-Fi modules our application will collect data and notify the user about the circumstances. The system will also detect empty parking slots and help the user in car parking. This system will be very accommodating for the drivers in inappropriate road conditions and will provide determined support while driving.
To enhance the flexibility and assistance to the car drivers in uncomfortable and congested traffic along with the uncertainty on roads due to heavy rainfalls or low construction quality we are developing a “Quick-witted Embedded Vehicular System” which will be able to assist the driver while driving through these conditions. The system will be detecting potholes, empty parking slots, collision situations, and will also have a DDR (Driving Data Recorder) which will be able to store the acceleration and braking of the car.
The implementation of the project will be done by following steps:
Users will interact to system with the help of a Mobile Application, which will be developed on a cross platform Kivy in python language or we can also use React Native for interactive UI and to increase the usability of our application. On the back-end we will be using ML Algorithms and Firebase data base for real-time data handling and execution.
Early Pothole detection would be managed by the camera placed in front of the car the media filmed by the camera will be sent to the application which would use ML algorithms to notify users beforehand about the presence of pothole.
In order to prevent car from early collision driver will be alarmed on his mobile phone application which will perceive data from firebase at the back-end that will receive data from ultrasonic sensor which is used to measure distance to the object placed in front of it. Wi-Fi module would be used to transmit data from microcontroller to firebase.
The user would be able to check or view his speed and the pressure applied on the brakes while he/she was driving, through the application. These figures will be processed in DDR module that will use GPS and pressure sensors to receive data and will store them in database.
ML algorithms would be implemented on an android application that will advise user about the availability of the slots once he/she drives through a parking lot.
Pothole Detection:
The system helps the driver to avoid dreadful potholes and humps and hence to avoid any tragic accidents due to bad road conditions. The information can also be used by the government authorities for maintenance purposes.
Potholes can cause damage to car tyres, rims, suspension and even knock your car out of alignment. Potholes detection could be very beneficial in order to prevent all this damage and cost due to it.
Coliision Detection:
Collision detection and alarming module focuses on social consequences. The social consequences of road traffic collisions include loss of productivity of the victims, the cost of the legal system, the cost of pain and suffering and loss of quality of victim's life. We will be able to draw a safe circle for drivers using this module.
Driving Data Recorder:
The system acts as a blackbox for cars, it records the speed and brakes while driving, this data could be used to prove who was at fault in an accident. So, if you have a prang and the other driver decides not to take responsibility, you can use the recorded data to uncover what really happened.
Parking Occupancy Detection:
This module would help driver to navigate that which slot is available for parking.
Sensors/Micro Controllers:
Sensors are used for data collection and for sensing the aspects and factors required for processing and alarming the driver. They work with the help of Microcontroller and transmits data to our application as well on in our database.
Android Application:
This application will be android based and it will provide a simple interface to user and will notify the user about potholes and collisions after data processing. User can also view his/her driving data through the application. The interface of app will be kept simple so user can use it without any age constraint.
Virtual Re-orientation:
This module is responsible for carrying out the virtual re-orientation operation using the algorithm.
Threshold Computation:
The threshold-computing module is responsible for determining the values that serves as boundary for the vehicle state being classified as a bump, pothole, braking event, or anomaly.
Data Aggregation:
The data aggregation module serves as a warehouse for all the relevant data aggregated from various components of the system. Duplication of Data and unnecessary information will be handled here to overcome the storage constraint.
Pothole Detection/Prevention:
The pothole-detection feature will work with a commercial mini camera which is considered as a main visual sensor. The system detects potholes over a wide area and at low cost. We are using Machine Learning algorithms for pothole-detection specifically designed to work with the embedded computing environments.
Collision detection:
Information for collision situation would be collected using the sensors and micro controller and it will be processed by our application using Threshold Computation and the driver will be notified if any inappropriate situation occurs.
DDR:
This module constantly monitors your vehicle's speed, sending data to an interactive on-board android application display console. The console displays time, distance, top speed and average speed; hence drivers can see their driving performance in real time.
Parking Occupancy detection:
