Project Title

Programmable Logic Controller Based Experimental Trainer

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Summary:

Programmable logic controller (PLC) based experimental trainer is a training system which contains programming software and digital operating trainer. It uses instruction for implementing the specific function. Such as logic, sequencing, timing, counting and arithmetic operation to control the various type of machine. In this project, students/learner will learn how to build and program a desktop industrial automation trainer. This work will provide an opportunity for Electrical Engineering society to help their students to familiarize them with programmable logic controller and its application in industry. PLC has been gaining popularity on the factory floor and will probably remain predominant in future. This trainer can be commercialized for the educational institutes at a much cheaper price compared to the trainers provided by various companies. Moreover, this work will provide a guide to our students and staff to construct the experimental trainers by themselves instead of relying on the companies.

Project Objectives

Objectives:

The main objective of PLC based trainer are

Project Implementation Method

Project Implementation Method

PLC:

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an industrial computer control system that continuously monitors the state of input devices and makes decisions based upon a custom program to control the state of output devices.

Programing Language:

Ladder logic:

The symbol for a normally open (NO) switch or relay contact is shown by the   '-||-' symbol and a normally closed (NC) is shown by '-||-'. The ladder diagram performs exactly the same function as the electrical circuit.

Toggle Switch:

Power switch confirms to safety standards for electrical equipment, compact with a good space factor (ratio of the volume occupied by the wire in the winding).

Push Buttons:

Push buttons are normally open tactile switches it allows us to power the circuit for any particular connection only when we press the button. Simply it makes the circuit connected when pressed and breaks when released.

Magnetic Contactor:

A magnetic contactor is used for switching On and Off current and a thermal overload relay for protecting the load. Switching the control system for electric power transmission and distribution. Operation of the start and stop of the motor. Electric power control for all kinds of industrial machinery, machine tools.

I/O Module:

The input-output modules are responsible for connecting the sensors and actuators to the PLC system to sense the different parameters such as pressure, temperature and LED.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the Project:

PLC training is progressing and persisting to be a better option for distinct industrial automation applications. Few developing PLC features cover bigger programming flexibility and easiness, more memory, scalability, small sizes and high speed. The main difference from other computers is that PLC’s are armoured for severe conditions (such as dust, moisture, heat, cold) and have the facility for extensive input/output arrangements. It plays an important role in engineering society because it polishes the student hands-on skills and technical knowledge.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Technical Details of Final Deliverable:

  1. Software for PC programming, for example, GX developer.
  2. The topology of the project on GX developer.
  3. Interfacing of PLC with PC using a programming cable.
  4. We can power ON PLC trainer and upload our designed program to the PLC.
  5. After uploading the program in PLC we test our program.
  6. On the trainer, we can adjust LED’s push buttons and magnetic contactors.
  7. We can test our program using LEDs as an output.
  8. We apply input using pushbuttons for pulse or by a toggle switch for continuous input.
  9. If it is required to operate a machine at high voltage then we can use magnetic contactors.
  10. PLC gives a signal to the magnetic contactors and then magnetic contactors will operate machines at high voltage.
  11. In this way, we can test our program and also checks the outputs of our program using LED and magnetic contactors.

So we perform any experiment using this PLC trainer.
