Project Title

Preparation of a Drug eluting Phospholipid Coating for Orthopedic Implants

Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject Summary

Orthopedic implants are rays of hope for people who are victim of traumatic accidents such as sport injuries, vehicle accidents and falls causing serious bone damage and eventually leading to not working of the effected body part or organ. Many researches have been taken place and numerous implants are being implanted to partially or fully replace the damaged bone. However implants failures have also been noticed which are often due to loosening of the implanted device or infection, leading to more serious problems than damaged.

Hence the purpose of this study is to prepare a drug eluting phospholipid coatings for orthopedic implants to decrease infections and provide proper bone integration.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

Phosphatidylserine is an acidic phospholipid which plays a major role in osseogenesis by providing the sites for primary bonding of calcium phosphate. Its hydrophobic parts are also known to play indirect role in preventing bacterial infections. Phospholipids also play a major role in drug delivery, there complex structure enable various options for chemical bonding, thus enabling them to carry various therapeutics.Due to these reasons Phosphotidylserine is electrosprayed on titanium.

Gentamicin:

Gentamicin is a commonly used antibiotic use in the treatment of many bacterial infections. GS loading solution were applied to coated titanium samples by pipetting the quantity of this solution required to achieve desired loading.

Benefits of the Project

The expenses of failed implants originate from numerous sources such as failure due to infections , due to biofilm formation or aseptic lossening. millions of dollars are spent annually in repetation surgeries for failed implants along with the pain and inconnvenience of the patients.

This research will tend to minimize the annual cost by decresing the no of repetative surguries and provide patients relatively easy experience by minimizing the physical and mental stress due to revesion surguries.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

DOPS coated and genetemicine loaded implats should be non toxic and have incresed biomineralization as compaired to plain titanium samples.
