Especially in pandemaic situtions the healthcare systems should be able to bear the pressure in terms of availbilty of medical recources and life saving devices. People living in Rural/Remote areas, hospitals remains unaware of developing medical conditions in their body and only realize it when they feel severe symptoms,even though after diagnosis there is a lack of recources in the health care sysytem ,they donot get life saving treatments. Preventation and treatment of such illnesses requires establishing a reliable method for treatment, monitoring, and storing patient health data including Ventilation, ECG, body temperature, pulse rate, blood oxygen etc. Portable ventilators and health monitoring equipments are required for treatment and diagnosis of disease. In a developing country like Pakistan, where two-thirds of the population lives in rural/remote regions, the availability of such medical equipment at basic and rural health care units is impeded by cost of equipment and skills require to operate them which in turns increases load on tehsil and district health headquarters.
This project is aimed at designing and fabrication of a medical-grade, portable emergency ventilator with vitals monitoring system that can be used for mechanical ventilation in critical situations, diagnose and monitoring basic health vitals of patients at basic and rural health centers, ambulances,or even at home in a quest to;
- Advanced and portable Ventilator facilities.
- Provide advance healthcare monitoring systemshaving access to underserved population.
- Bring innovations in Pakistan primary health system and strengthening it.
Portable Emergency Ventilator with Vitals Monitoring System will be designed, fabricated, programmed, and tested at a large clinical scale. A customized PCB will be developed for portable healthcare monitoring systems to diagnose health vitals.
Project ObjectivesHealthcare faclities,government/private hospitals in Pakistan have lack of life saving medical machineries like ventilators and other health care monitoring systems.Majority of people, remain underdiagnosed and untreated, due to the lack of availability of health care facilities. A number of patients could not be saved due to the unavailbilty of life saving facilties such as ventilators. Moreover the traditional Healthcare monitoring devices and ventilators are too much costly and have have dificulties in their opertions and efficiency. Modern age require the trasformation of these devises towards portablness, smart operating systems and low cost.
Portable Emergency Ventilator with Vitals Monitoring System is a modern and smart soltion towrds the arising problems. The main objectivies of this system includes
- Avalibilty of ventilators at medical faclities across the country.
- Low cost and portable ventilator with healthcare monitoring system will be availble at basic and rural health centers, ambulances.
- Providing smart and reliable healthcare devices, espessially to BHUs and RHUs.
- To bring Pakistan medicaly self-realiance.
- To generate revenue by commercializing the device.
- In long term treatments this device can be used at home as its functioning will be easy to operate by people with basic knowledege.
- In critical sitiuations it could be brought anywhere as it is as portable and smart device.
The Implementation of this project includes in depth knowledge of Mechanical Ventilation systems and Human Health Vitals system. This cruicial phase is being done by litarature review at possible large sacle, collection Clinical data and information, knowledege of engineenring behind the ventiolation and monitoring systems, and the knowledge to overcome complexities in making human health care device.
The second phase of the project implementation is the fabrication and assembling of mechanical systems. In this phase the designed mechanical components including motors, flapers, gears and shafts and main frames.
Some electrical components will also be used including Sensors, Aurdinos, Control boards, Alarms, Displaying systems etc. Most of these parts will be purcahsed and modifications will be done according to the requirments.
Third and and most important phase of the project implementaion is the the Programing of the systems in accordance with the clinical data. Circuits will be designed and programed in this phase.
In the last pahse of fabrications the ventilation sysytem and health monitoring system will be combined in order to operational requirments.
After the fabrication of the Portable Emergency Ventilator with Vitals Monitoring System, It will be sent to different hospitals for clinical trails under the supervision of Medical Team including doctors, surgeons and technicians and results will be obtained.
After the completion of clinical trails the obtained data will be observed and anlysed by the medical team and results will be obtained. After succesfull clinical trails the Portable Emergency Ventilator with Vitals Monitoring System will be presented.

A working Portable Emergency Ventilator with Vitals Monitoring System that can be operated on a test lung will be been developed. The device will have user-controlled breath rate and tidal volume. It features assist control and an over-pressure alarm. It has low power requirements. It is portable, weighing almost 9 lbs (4.1 kg) and the theoratical dimensions will be near off to measuring 11.25 x 6.7 x 8 inches (285 x 170 x 200 mm) , and has a handle and easy to use latches.
The Portable Emergency Ventilator with Vitals Monitoring System will have display settings and status on a screen. The development of this proof-of-concept is being planned. Iterations will incorporate changes prompted by the results of our device testing. It will incorporate an adjustable inspiratory to expiratory ratio. We will investigate the effects that changing the motor will cause to cost and wieght. We will also incorporate addon features including a PEEP valve, a humidity exchanger and a blow-off valve, and all human vitals moitoring sensors.. Since some of these infrastructure already supports commercial addons, these components can be easily purchased and incorporated. The design will be changed to be injection molded such that the mass-produced a version would cost less than Rs 80000 only to produce. Weight and size will be minimized to maximum possible level. Consideration to a pediatric version will also be given. Cam arm shape will be optimized to ensure the use of the most efficient rolling contact embodiment. An LCD screen will be included, and alarms programmed for loss of power, loss of breathing circuit integrity and low battery life. Extensive testing of the ventilator's repeatability will be conducted. Finally, we will test the ventilator on a lung model to meet ventilator standards and market the product.
