Plastic Roads
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject Summaryuse of plastic bags is increasing day by day which affect our environment in many ways also plastic ison-biodegrablewhich takes 4500 yearsto decay. Our main concern is one of the environmental friendly approach in terms of Green Roads.
Our topic of research is Utilization Of Plastic waste (LLDPE) linear low density polyethylene And Its Use As A Binder, fine and Coarse aggregates In Flexible Pavements.and agood approach towards green environment.
As different countries and organization is working on plastic roads volkervessels(netherland) organization, Dr R Vasudevhan who is consider the father of plastic roads.
As different researches and study shows that plastic roads is environmental friendly and perform better than the comon bitumenous roads in term of strength durability fatigue impact value.
On the other hand it also contribute towards green environment which is the basic aim of SDGs, COP,EPAetc.
According to EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) a united states based agency working on waste material management program. The total generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), In 2018 it recorded 4.9 pounds per person per day. By using these waste in plastic roads we can control much amount of waste.
Also according to UNDP 2016 report Pakistan is on 4th position amongst waste collection. As Pakistan produced 30 million to 48 million tons of solid waste per year, where as this waste is increasing 2% to 3% per year.Although Pakistan generates 77 thousands of tons daily solid waste in main cities in which 70% to 80% of waste is collected to proper disposal sites.these waste needs serious attension so plastic roads is one the main alternative forthe reduction of waste.
In term of working If we use plastic wastes it shows resistance to fatigue, minimize rut depths, slow rate of deteriation resistance to chemicals cost durable increase impact value also it improve quality of pavement.
According to researcher plastic roads are cost benefits than common asphalt one according to study 10% of direct saving in economy is possible by implementation of plastic roads. Also asphalt is responsible for 2% of global emmissions which wil minimize in plastic roads upto grest extent.
the process use will be the Wet process for mix design.
Project ObjectivesThe main application of the research are as follows
To Improve Quality of Pavement
Economical Approach towards roads
Sustainable approach towards Green Environment
To solve Environmental Issues
To Control Waste Production
Project Implementation MethodThere are two methods for the implementation of this project
1) Dry Process
2) Wet Process
we will adopt the wet process. in this process following steps are involved
1) collection of waste
2) cleaning and drying of plastic waste
3) shredding of waste into required size
4) blending of waste with hot bitumen at 160 degrees
5) stirring with mechanical stirrer andthen cool upto 1300 degrees
6) at last mixwith aggregates and laid in roads
Benefits of the ProjectFollowing are some benefits of the project
1) With the use of plastic roads it will results in substantially savings of economy. At least 10% was possible as direct savings, By plastic Road.According to 2018 report Pakistan Import Approximately US $76 millions worth of Bitumen. The payment detail in pkR Rs 11,959,315,712 Against 195,509 Metric tons.in which 10% will be direct saving by implementation of plastic roads
2) According to UNDP 2016 report Pakistan is on 4th position amongst waste collection. As Pakistan produced 30 million to 48 million tons of solid waste per year, where as this waste is increasing 2% to 3% per year.By implementation of plastic roads we can control much amount of waste which adversly affect our environment
3) According to Environmentalist at least 15-20% of carbon emission can be controlled. Also bitumen is reponsible for 2-3% of global climate change by implementation of plastic roads we can control much amount of these emission
4) The main benefits of plastic roads is that they are environmental friendly
5) In term of strength fatigue durability impact plastic roads perform better than the common bitumenous roads.
