Phase Mutual Load Sharing with Theft Detection
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryPhase Mutual Load Sharing with Theft Detection is a project that deals with the commonn problem that occurs in our power distribution system. If a phase is overloaded, the only method is to cut off the electricity to decrease some load. If the overloading is decreased, then the electricity supply is continued again. In our project, in the first part, we proposed the idea of load sharing between the phases that in case of overloading, some load of one phase is automatically shifted to another phase to decrease some load. If the next phase is also overloaded, then the load will be shifted to the third phase. This solves the problem of tripping or shut down of electricity caused due to overloading. The information about the phase currents is also displayed real time on the screen simultanuously. In the second part, we are implementing theft detection which is also a very important issue now-a-days. Due to electricity theft, there is a huge loss in terms of power and economy of our country. In this project, if someone tries electrcity theft, the designed system indicates the theft so that the further actions can be taken.
Project ObjectivesThe project objectives are:
- Reduce the overloading problem which is the root cause of further problems in the distribution system and achieving the sucessful shifting of loads between the phases which also increases the efficiency.
- Reduce the electricity theft that also cause overloading and it is also very dangerous for the people around the point of theft. Theft also causes losses to power and economy of country.
The project implementation method includes the operation of shifting of the loads and detection of theft which is carried out by the microcontroller. The microcontroller gets the information of phase currents continuously. On the basis of phase currents, the microcontroller takes actions that whether the load shoud be shifted or not. The loads are shifted with the help of relays. Theft detection is also on the basis of currents. The microcontroller monitors and compares the phase and load currents continuously and when the theft occurs, the detecting mechanism activates and tells about the theft.
Benefits of the ProjectThe benefits of this project are:
- Decreasing the overloading helps in improving the efficiency of the distribution transformers.
- Improves the efficiency of wires because it prevents the overloading of the currents in wires and also prevents them from melting and breaking.
- Phase sharing technique also ensures the continuity of the electric supply to the consumers without tripping.
- Reduction of the electricity theft helps in managing the loads properly to the real consumers
- When theft is detected and actions are taken to reduce them, the power losses decrease and also helps in improving the billing system.
- Theft reduction helps in saving the power which can be utilized in other needy areas.
- Theft reduction also helps improve the economy as billions of rupees are wasted (left unpaid) as the free electricity is consumed by the electricity thieves.
In this project, the final deliverable will be a hardware and software based system representation that shows the districution transformers and also a small system which includes electricity poles and also the includes the consumers (load). All the required sensors are mounted on the same board. The information is also displayed on the screen that will be mounted on the board and also includes switches to manually increase the loading. The microcontroller (Atmega 2560) will also be mounted on the board. The electricity poles are also mounted which carries the wires through the whole system to connect to the consumers loads.
