PC to PC Data Communication Through Light
The project focuses on implementation of VLC transmitter/receiver to transmit textual and image data over short range. The system mainly involves LED(s), photo diode and arduinos along with some ICs and MOSFETS. The technique is more efficient and cost effective as compared to RF communication. It can be implemented in areas where RF communication is not possible such as high altitudes and under water.
Objectives:
On hardware level, the project will be implemented using PCs interfaced with Arduinos. The Arduinos will further be interfaced with transmitter and receiver circuitry. Data will be read from PC, sent through visible light transmitter to receiver where it will be processed to convert it back to readable data. The final data will then be shown on other PC.
For software level, optisystem software is used. But since text conversion and image processing is not possible in optisystem therefore it is interfaced with MATLAB. Similar to hardware, the software part will also involve transmission and reception of textual and image data. The processing in between would be done through optisystem software.
1. The system is incredibly fast with speeds upto 10Gbps.
2. Unlike radio waves, light waves can’t penetrate through walls which makes the technique more secure.
3. It can be provided in sensitive areas such as military areas and petro-chemical plants.
4. Light communication is possible under water which can’t be done using radio waves.
Final deliverables are to transmit and receive text and images from PC to PC. Data from PCs would be read using arduino. This arduino will then be interfaced with transmitting circuitry. Main component of transmitter side is LED. Medium between transmitter and receiver is free space. At receiver end the main component is photo diode. At receiving end arduino will collect data and send it to PC where it will be converted back to its original form.
