Project Summary

As the world moves into advancements, the quench for power generation increases. The idea of power generation through conventional energy sources results in a higher expense as well as causes pollution. A non-conventional way to generate high amounts of electrical energy is by using ocean water and its tides.

            The problem could be solved by using an Oscillating Water Column power generation. By utilizing the ocean and its tides to push air through a chamber containing a unidirectional turbine, this would build a pressure that pushes the air up the turbine that is to be coupled by a generator or alternator, could produce sufficient amount of energy.

Project Objectives

The primary aim of this project is to fill the gap of the maximum demand of the country’s electricity and the total electricity being supplied within the country. This way the requirements of the people would be fulfilled along with a massive decrease in the primary problem of the country, load shedding.

As we know that energy created by water is the most economic one, and that the waves that the ocean carries, contains a huge amount of kinetic energy. Utilizing the waves kinetic energy and converting it into electrical energy would be helpful to not only the country, by fulfilling its energy requirements due to its efficiency, but also environmentally, because it is not only a non-conventional method but also does not produce pollution and it is away from people and animals and they are not harmed. There are various ways of fetching energy from waves and this is one of those.

Project Implementation Method

An Oscillating Water Column (OWC) could be used to utilize the energy that the ocean carries to push the air through a unidirectional turbine coupled to a generator. When the waves push through on one end, it pushes the air through the turbine by the pressure created. As the water goes back down it pulls the air in from the other end, forcing the turbine to rotate in the same direction once again.

Benefits of the Project

The total installed capacity of electricity in the country of Pakistan is about 37402 MW, but due to the passage of time the total transmission and distribution capacity within the country has dropped to about 22000 MW. Although the generation of the country is about 22000 MW the maximum demand of the industries and residency within the country is 25000 MW.

Since ocean energy is in vast amounts throughout the world, using it as a source to fulfill the requirement of the electricity within the country. And since even a prototype was able to generate about 75kW, using multiple OCWs at the seaside would help improve the situation of the country.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A total of two Axial Flux Generators would be installed in a chamber, each connected to a separate turbine via a coupler. As the air is pushed by the tide waves through the chamber, the turbine rotates in a particular direction generating electricity. Upon the return of this wave, the air will be pulled through the turbine. Since this is a unidirectional turbine, it will rotate in the same direction once again. This will ensure that the polarity and power angles are not suddenly changed.
The project cost is actually about 1 lac and 40 thousand, however, due to the option of a 80 thousand budget in the website, we could not adjust the cost there.
