Optimization of Cutting Parameters of AISI 1045 by using Taguchi Technique
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryCutting fluids are used as coolant in machining industries to reduce friction and S.R. This project shows the performance of a vegetable cutting fluid that can be the alternative of conventional cutting fluids to reduce the S.R. It is noted that machining industries shows great interest in vegetable cutting fluids so that the machining process becomes a clean process as they are highly biodegradable. Taguchi optimization technique is used to optimize the cutting parameters of AISI 10455 in turning operation. Cutting speed, depth of cut and feed rate are selected as machining parameters. L9 orthogonal array is selected for design of experiments for three factors with three levels of each factor. Experiments performed using both Rapseed and commercial oil. Surface roughness is measured for each experiments and results are analyzed using S/N ratio and ANOVA. MINITAB software is used to analyze the results. Confirmation tests performed on optimized parameters. The study shows that Rapseed oil gives better results than commercial fluids.
Project ObjectivesMain objective is to acquire lower surface roughness of AISI 1045 by using Taguchi optimization. The second objective is to compare the effect of vegetable based and mineral based cutting fluids on surface roughness of AISI 1045.
Project Implementation MethodL9 array gives the design of experiment. Surfactant Tween 20 will make blend of Rapseed oil and water. Each shaft of 100 mm length will go through turning operation of 25.4 mm. Cutting Parameters for each experiment will take from design of experiments. Surface roughness will e measured using Profilo meter. Results will be analyzed using MINITAB software.
Benefits of the ProjectOptimized parameters of AISI 1045 will be achieved. Rapseed oil will give better results than commercial oil. Biodegradable Rapseed oil is beneficial to environment and also it is renewable statistical analysis will indicates the most effecting parameter for surface roughness.
