Project Summary

Optical fiber communication systems (OFCS) become the backbone in the modern world for fast transfer of information in public switched telephone networks (PSTNs).  Due to its vast usage, trained personnel are required to design and operate sophisticated equipment of OFCS. Engineering universities such as Quaid-e- Awam university (QUEST) have designed courses and laboratories to train their electronic and communication students with OFCS technology. The laboratories require easy to understand training module so that the students can be trained. The problem in the laboratories is that the number of trainers is limited such as 12-15 students per trainer, which in turn puts pressure on an understanding of knowledge. One of the reasons for having a limited number of trainers is the high cost of OFCS trainers, which is around 1.5 lac. The cost of the OFCS trainer could be reduced if developed locally. The objective of this project is to develop indigenously a cost-effective and user-friendly OFCS training module for the student of electronic and communication engineering of QUEST.

The OFCS trainer will consist of a transmitter, channel (optical fiber cable) and receiver. The transmitter takes the information from the user to electrically process it and then convert that electrically processed information into light through LED or LASER. The information converted into light be sent via optical fiber cable to the receiver. The received optical information signal is converted into the electrical signal by a photodetector and then be processed at the receiver for the recipient's understanding.

The developed OFCS trainer be used to do hands-on practice on experiments i.e. (i) measurement of losses (such attenuation, absorption)(ii) measurement of Numerical Aperture; (iii) development of analog link; (iv) development of digital link.

With the development of this project not only the number of students per trainer be reduced but also the expenditure on the purchase of costly trainers be saved.

Project Objectives

The objective to design and develop optical Fiber Communication training module is to provide an additional workstation for laboratory so that students of the Electronic Department of Quaid-e-Awam University Of engineering science and technology Nawabshah can perform and practice lab practical regarding Laser and Fiber optics and related courses with more ease and comfort as the Training kit is purchased from abroad and its maintenance becomes challenge for concerned people so it is decided to try to produce the training module locally and manufacture it with customized features and relatively low cost than that of available one.

Benefits of the Project

the project aims to provide hands-on practice to electronic department students and related fields, this will bring motivation in many students to design and construct different other panels and workstations that are imported from abroad in addition to optical communication is emerging globally day by day so if Pakistan wants to walk side by side with the world then it is very important to meet the challenges and train students from bachelors degree programs.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

the development of a Training module of the optical fiber communication system is consists of hardware parts.

following are the details of the final product,

  1. 850 nm infrared led transmitter.
  2. a laser diode as a generator of lightwave carrier.
  3. Mz modulator modulates electrical signal over lightwave
  4. analog optical fiber link with low attenuation and high speed.
  5. digital link with a 1.54mpbs rate.
