Project Title

Opensource Accidental Avoidance and Tracking System for Electric Vehicles

Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject Summary

Our project aims to develop an open source “Accident Avoidance And Tracking system for Electric Vehicles (EVs). This system will be based on Raspberry Pi4 platform. Sharp IR sensors and cameras will be deployed for accidental avoidance. This system will be capable of detecting potential threats of collision to a range of 5.5m which is more than the safe driving distance defined as one car length for most of the vehicles. Moreover, we are working on making a real-time GPS tracker with accurate positioning using Google Maps. Secondly to accommodate the automobiles with an in dash infotainment system developed using “OPENAUTO PRO” which is a software that can be installed on Raspberry Pi devices and used as a Human Machine Interface for the in-dash LCD display. OPENAUTO PRO is also compatible with ANDRIOD AUTO which is another well know software used in today’s automobile industry. We aim to build a cost efficient and cost effective system which can be implemented as modern car infotainment system in the upcoming era of EVs.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to make an open source, cost efficient and most importantly a reliable Accident Avoidance and Tracking System that can work particularly with EV's but is not limited to it. It can be easily used with any other automobile.

Project Implementation Method

We plan on implementing this project on the Raspberry Pi4 platform using Raspbian OS which is an open-source OS provided by Pi organization’s itself. On top of Raspbian we will use another software named OPENAUTO PRO that will work as HMI for the in-dash display (a 7inch Touchscreen) and the infotainment system of the car. Two types of infrared sensors would be used of ranges(100-550cm) and (20-150cm) . the second one is used to reduce the blind spot of the system from 100cm to only 20cm.To interface the Infrared sensors with Raspberry Pi a high resolution with high sampling rate Analog to Digital converter will be used. The code for the detection and avoidance of accidental avoidance system will be written in python programming language. On ignition the device will boot itself and start an algorithm to read and compare data from the sensors and alert the driver in case close proximity with objects or possible collisions. The reverse parking camera and the display would be interface through the dedicated ribbon connector provided in the Pi4 device. Mounts will be used to set up the sensors and other equipment in the car’s bumper and dash. The reverse parking camera will be switched on only when the car is put in reverse gear. Also, the GPS tracker will be interfaces with pi4 and will also display locations inside the car.
