Unfortunately, there are several pests that may damage cotton bolls. To analyze the internal conditions of cotton boll, we are proposing an x-ray based system to detect any insect or pest. A soft X-ray digital imaging system will be used to acquire radiographs of cotton ball. Samples with known internal defects will be imaged. Image processing algorithms will be applied to determine quality and internal defects. The aim of this project is to enhance the quality and yield of cotton for the betterment of the country.
Project ObjectivesFollowing are the main objectives of the project
- To differentiate the insects inside the cotton ball.
- To enhance the quality of cotton.
- To analyze internal behavior of cotton ball.
- To determine the internal defects of cotton ball which cannot seen by naked eyes.
A soft X-ray digital imaging system will be used to acquire radiographs of cotton ball. Samples with known internal defects will be imaged. Image processing algorithms will be applied to determine quality and internal defects.

We are going to deliver a project to analyze the internal defects of cotton ball through non-destructive method.
The details of the proposed equipment are:
- X-ray tube (2X2-A).
- Solid state digital X-ray camera.
- Fluorescent screens
- Power supply
- Computer
The equipment has an X-ray tube capable of operating at voltages suitable for X-ray imaging of agricultural products from 4 to 50kVp with maximum current of 1 mA. The solid-state digital X-ray camera will be used below the target sample. A fluorescent screen, will be used in direct contact with the photodiode array, which will convert X-ray photons to visible light. The image will be taken by the camera and will be send to computer. Where image will be read through image processing algorithm to determine the disease.
