modification and characterization of stab resistant armor
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryStab resistance is a personal protective equipment to protect human body against stabbing. The stabbing equipment used is always pointy objects and edged weapons such as knife, spike etc. The armor should be light in weight, comfortable that it could be wear all day in every climate condition. The armor could be made of steel, ceramic shield but would only cause protection not to comfort. To make comfortable armor we must use textile material many high strength materials could be used for these purposes
Project ObjectivesWe are aiming to make stab resistant armor for the protection against level 2 energy according to NIJ 0115.0 standard and to modify the drop tube testing machine so that we can easily calculate the required stabbing energy for level 2.
Objectives:
The objective related to our study are,
- To modify the level1 drop tube testing machine which can exert energy of 33j and 50j
- Testing the fabrics maximum resistance to knife penetration
- Using the most suitable combination of fabrics for resisting total energy
According to the standard NIJ 0115.00, drop test tube method used to test the materials that are used to develop stab resistant armor and this standard includes all of the information about knife and blades and its sharpness, pointedness, handle and other parameters likes attacking angle and impacts and the skill of the attackers.
Materials that are used to develop stab resistant body armor are:
- Kevlar
- Dyneema
- Pc canvas
- Pvc fabric (polyvinyl chloride)
- Pe fabric (polyethylene)
- Polyester
The protection Armor that is to be designed should be flexible enough that can easily be wear and it should be light weight so that it does not cause any irritation while wearing. The areas where it can be used does not include only the defense sector, hence it is most widely used for military purpose so the Armor contribution towards defense sector is more but it can also be used for areas where critical tasks are performed like stunts or acrobatics where there is risk of hitting of sharp objects or pointy edges. Beside this it can also be used for security professionals like security guards, traffic wardens and paramedics, etc.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableBody armor should provide a complete protection against the sensitive parts pf the body. Body armor of high protection grades are achievable using steel- or ceramic shields, which are inflexible and heavy so a flexible body armor can be made using different textile materials that gives a restricted protection, that depends on a stab device and a applied energy.
