Mirror therapy gloves for stroke patients
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryInterruption or reduction of blood supply to the parts of brain prevents the brain tissues from getting oxygen and nutrients and as a result brain cells begin to die in few minutes. This may paralyze one side of your body or lose control of certain muscles such as hand muscles. According to world health organization (WHO), every year about 15 million people suffer stroke in the world. Of these about 5 million become permanently disable while another 5 million die due to stoke. In Pakistan for year 2000-2016 we observed 95 per 100,000 stroke patients, most cases are noted among aged 75 to 85. This pair of glove will help the stroke patients to regain the proper physical movement of their hands using mirror therapy by effectively measuring the movement of muscles from non-effected hand using motor glove, signals from this glove will be transmitted to the sensory glove which provide flexion and constriction strength for each finger.
Project Objectives- To provide a comfort and portable solution over the rigid exoskeleton devices.
- Allow patients to carry out daily training tasks.
- Easy and fast rehabilitation for stroke patients.
First through interfacing the force and flex sensors with microcontroller data is collected. Particularly values of force applied and bending angle were observed through non-affected hand. This data then transmitted to the motor glove using wifi module to perform the gesture.
Benefits of the Project- Wireless and portable
- Low powered device
- Help in performing daily tasks and for easy rehabilitation
- Self control rehabilitation gloves
- Force sensors mounted on sensory glove
- Flex sensor module mounted on sensory glove
- Sensor interfacing circuit
- Collecting data from sensory glove
- Sending collected data to motor glove using wifi
