Micro Controller Based Power Management Using Multiple Power Sources Solar Battery Wapda
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryMammoth population and electricity consumption causes one of the biggest energy crisis problems in our country. In order to overcome these crisis design and implementation of Hybrid Inverter system is demonstrated to ensure continuous output current to load in residential application utilizing Photovoltaic (PV) energy, battery and AC Mains. Hybrid inverter designed highly satisfies the necessity in rural areas where AC Mains are hardly available solar energy gets priority here to charge storage battery rather than AC Grids hence save megawatts power daily. To keep system components hazard free and extend the battery bank lifetime, it includes charging current controlling by microcontroller unit (MCU) and exact battery level sensing, a MPPT charging to obtain maximum PV energy from Solar Modules. Computer simulations and experiment results show the validity of this proposed system to have high power conversion efficiency, eco-friendly and low harmonic distortions. A solar emulator which follows the IV characteristics of solar panel has been designed for testing the system.
Project ObjectivesOur aim is to provide a product having the following features:
- Priority to Solar Energy: Provides priority to solar while charging batteries and running hence leads to adequate savings on electricity bills.
- Constant, Clean & Uninterrupted Power: It provides constant, clean and constant power to loads to ensure their efficiency and longevity.
- Pure Sine Wave Inverter: It enables smooth and quiet operation of appliances as harmonics distortion is reduced.
- Go Green: It gives preference to renewable resources for generation of energy so it reduces the pollution.
- Maintenance Free: Hybrid inverter is easy to install, then it automatically manages everything and is maintenance free.
DC voltage is obtaine from Solar Panels during day in the presence of Sunlight and Batteries during night as the input for the hybrid inverter, Battery Charging Control circuit is used to avoid overcharging of batteries and current reversing protection from batteries to Solar panel. We also add A.C. Mains in the case when batteries are discharged. SO by doing this we are able to provide efficient, envirnment friendly, Uniterrupted power to the common load. Unipolar SPWM technique is used for Hybrid Inverter.
- The hybrid inverter can be utilized by remote areas, large scale or small scale industries that require all kinds of level of power consumption that are facing the energy crisis problems and willing hoping to save money and remain environment friendly. It only requires to mount solar panels and enclosure and connect them to the electrical accessories.
- DC power source utilization applications include use of DC in motor vehicles and also from batteries to power AC loads
- It is uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) allows energy to be stored as DC in batteries and used as AC when needed.
We are designing and implementing Hybrid inverter to invert DC to AC. It includes Gate Driver Circuit to isolate and step-up the micro controllers’ voltage for the MOSFETs. We are unipolar SPWMs to the gates of MOSFETs. SPWMs are generated from the micro controller (STM32F407). We are switching on the
MOSFET 1 and 2 at a time while keeping the switch 3 and 4 and vice versa to get the sine wave at output. Then we use LC filter to convert this to pure sinusoidal waveform with minimum harmonics. For PV Emulator we are using SCRs by controlling their firing angles and using PI feedback technique we are implementing The IV curve of a typical Solar Panel. Then we are Synchronizing the output of PV Emulator, Battery, Inverter and Generator conditions and not considering the phase sequence for synchronization. this synchronized voltage is then fed to the load. If we get to required budget then we will be able to run one of the departments' lab on this hybrid inverter which will results in saving of electricty bill.
