Project Title

Islanding detection in a smart grid system

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

All distributed generators (DG), especially thoseconnected to low voltage distribution grids are required to detectislanding conditions. The methods for detecting islanding are classified in three main categories: passive, active and communicationbased. Passive methods are based on grid monitoring, are easyto implement but have a large non-detection zone in the caselocal generation meets the load demand. Active methods, whichare commonly used today, may reduce the non-detection zonebut in the case of large amount of DGs installed, power qualityproblems are foreseen. The communication based methods areseldom used today mainly because of high cost of communication.

However, if the islanding detection schemes can use thecommunication infrastructure to be deployed for smart grids, e.g.for metering, feeder automation, etc. the communication basedmethods will become cost competitive with the active methodswithout their weaknesses.

The paper also proposes a new method to be used ina smart grid infrastructure

Project Objectives

power supply is not interrupted in the island even during the Grid disturbance. This helps to supply start up power to various Power Plants to restore the system.

Restoration of island is quite easier when compared to restoration of whole system from black out state. The island is synchronized to Grid for integration

Project Implementation Method

we want to build a solar plant that will provide energy to grid in normal condition.

but solar plant will give energy to load incase of islanding.

solar energy is clean and cheap so we want to make bi directional solar plant that will feed loads in case of islanding .and will give energy to grid in normal condition.

Benefits of the Project

The main aim of this project is to decrease the load on the utility grid by generating electrical power from renewables using solar and the wind source. The proposed system helps us in listed sections.

To design a system without operating cost
