Project Summary

Skin wounds require regular care to reconcile quickly. Clinical wound monitoring focused on physical appearance of wound i.e. wound width, shape, color etc. Although, wound appearance is most crucial factors to influence healing process. However, other factors also contribute in healing process. Wound internal and external environment is one such factor that may show positive or negative impact on healing. Wound healing influence by two kinds of environment i.e. exterior environment that is nearby to wound surface and interior environment that is environment of adjacent part under wound surface. Both types of environment, play important role in wound healing, which may contribute to continuous or impaired wound healing.

Although, different previous studies provided methods to measure wound effecting factors but they didn’t consider whole environment rather they only focused on single factor either wound moisture level, pH value or healing enzymes. Moreover, current wound care is clinical centric where patient need to visit medical experts regularly to assure healthy recovery from wound, however mostly patient didn’t pay attention which may cause impaired wound healing, chronic wounds, infections at wound site etc. There is no wound care solution, according to our best knowledge, which facilitate patient at their home for monitoring environmental factors effect on healing.

In current project we plan to design an efficient wound care solution as regular wound monitoring is essential factor to assure healthy wound healing. We plan to design an effective wound care solution to monitor wound healing by analyzing real time environmental factors. This wound care solution, consists of six working modules, which will design by using IoT, data mining and android technologies. This wound care solution will enable patient to monitor wound healing at low cost, by reduction in clinical visit and enable patient to track environmental factors effect on wound healing at their own site. Moreover, this wound care solution can beneficial for health center and hospitals as well, where this wound care solution can install to monitor environmental factors and thus enables medical experts to control environmental factors in operation theaters and places of sensitive wound treatment.  

Project Objectives

Objectives:

  • To investigate environmental factors role in wound healing
  • To investigate challenges in wound care solutions.
  • To investigate limitations of clinical centric wound care.
  • To find solution for early and efficient wound-healing.
  • To determine feasibility levels of environment for wound healing by analyzing normal and abnormal ranges of environmental factors.
  • To design relational equations of environmental factors effect on wound healing.
  • To design correlation charts of environmental factors for wound-healing.
  • To involve PhD/MS students in the research
  • To publish/patent a few quality publications in the domain
  • To develop a small, easy to use, low-cost device for monitoring of wound-healing process.
  • To develop an android base wound care app commercially available for patients to monitor wound healing at their home.
  • To develop commercial booklet of environmental factors role in wound healing for awareness of peoples regarding wound healing.

Project Implementation Method

The proposed project of wound care solution contains 6 working.. All components of project will work in collaboration with each other, where each working module is responsible to perform specific task on data and forward it to next module for further processing. Each component has different structure and functions based on its designated task. Technical and functional description of each working module provided comprehensively. The wound care project is based on decision support system where input for training will come through sensors base data collection, which then pass to decision support system comprises of data processing, decision support rules and analysis, which will generate wound care status as predictions, previously provide as training target to DSS.

we will design a circuit for measurement of interior and exterior environmental factors. The circuit will contain different components for measurement, as described below.

  • Microcontroller
  • Sensors for interior environmental factors
  • Sensors for exterior environmental Factors
  • Connecting Wires
  • Jumper wires

. Sensor for exterior temperature, sensor for exterior humidity, sensor for air quality, sensor for smoke, sensor for SpO2 and sensor for wound temperature. All necessary sensors will connect with microcontroller by using appropriate jumper wires, breadboard and resistor (where required). This connection will be made after complete analysis of each sensor configuration with microcontroller.

Benefits of the Project

  • Another great benefit of IoT in healthcare is reduced costs. With IoT in healthcare, non-critical patients will be able to stay at home while various IoT devices monitor and send all important information to the health facility — meaning less hospital stays and doctor visits.

  • The main advantages of IoT implementation in healthcare: Remote monitoring: Real-time remote monitoring via connected IoT devices and smart alerts can diagnose illnesses, treat diseases and save lives in case of a medical emergency.

  • Smart sensors analyze health conditions, lifestyle choices and the environment and recommend preventative measures, which will reduce the occurrence of diseases and acute states.

  •  IoT reduces costly visits to doctors and hospital admissions and makes testing more affordable.
  •  Accessibility of electronic medical records allow patients to receive quality care and help healthcare providers make the right medical decisions and prevent complications. 
  • IoT devices help track the administration of drugs and the response to the treatment and reduce medical error. 
  • Using IoT devices, healthcare authorities can get valuable information about equipment and staff effectiveness and use it to suggest innovations. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • The proposed project idea will facilitate patients by providing them with comprehensive android based platform for effective wound monitoring at their own site.
  • The proposed project should highlight benefits of patient centric wound care solution through quality of experiences.
  • The proposed project idea of effective wound care solution facilitates patients by providing them low cost tool to monitor environmental factors effect on wound healing.
  • The proposed project idea shall motivate patient to pay more attention to wound in order to assure healthy and timely recovery.
  • The proposed project idea shall facilitate physicians and medical experts to monitor environmental feasibility levels for wound healing in hospitals and health centers as well.
  • The proposed project idea will generate effective research article to highlight correlation of different environmental factors in wound healing and identification of environmental feasibility level in wound healing through real time sensing of environmental factors.

The proposed project should provide replication strategies to motivate researchers for studying environmental factors role in wound healing by using new techniques and tools
