IoT BASED SMART POWER SOCKET FOR MO MONITORING AND CONTROLLING ELECTRICAL HOME APPLIANCES
The recent increase in electricity tariffs and the introduction of feed-in tariffs from renewable resources have increased the interest of energy consumers, such as those in commercial and residential buildings, in reducing their energy usage. This paper proposes a smart power socket and central control system that utilizes the LoRa communication protocol to control energy usage. The system is designed such that smart sockets wirelessly provide the necessary data to a central controller. Then, the system analyzes the data to generate control commands to turn the devices attached to the smart socket on or off. The proposed smart socket can correctly read the power consumption of wirelessly connected devices from up to 10km away without loss of data. The central controller can effectively control multiple sockets based on a scheduled user program code.
Thus, the proposed smart socket system can be fully utilized in a home energy management system with a proper scheduling algorithm.
The project will provide software as well as hardware to get real-time notifications and monitoring of 100s of electrical appliances, to smoothen their operations, processes, and management. The project will monitor a load of appliances also control the appliances through switching.
The project will give information about how much power an appliance is consuming, the current flowing through it, supply voltages, and power consumption.
This can provide manual, remote, and automatic switching of the appliances; thus, it will save energy consumption and reduction in the monthly utility bills.
With the help of smart sockets, we can reduce energy usage or consumption at the end-user level, minimize fossil fuse usage, less carbon footprint, etc.
The product will be manufactured locally, with the skilled people, it will create jobs and support local industry and benefits our counties economy.
The project will minimize repairment cost and replacement cost that burdens consumers.
Our project will provide the following features for the energy sector.
Central Monitoring of 100sof appliances within the given area.
Central controlling by remotely turn on and off.
The system will provide Real-time alert/notification, SMS, and call.
Minute by minute Data extraction of; Temperature, Current, Voltage, Power consumption, etc. Provides alert if an unwanted situation occurs.
The global trend in electrical energy consumption has exponentially grown in recent years because of economic development and population increase. However, utility regulators attempt to reduce end-user consumption in many ways, such as the introduction of high tariff rates, tariff time usage, and demand response programs, due to limitations in electrical energy supply systems. Energy regulators also attempt to reduce fossil fuel dependency because of oil reserve depletion, oil price volatility, and negative environmental impacts, such as CO2 emissions. Therefore, end-users must reduce their energy consumption by altering their energy utilization patterns and using energy-efficient equipment and devices. Governments around the world encourage energy users to reduce energy utilization by increasing their awareness, introducing incentives for users with low-energy consumption, and promoting green energy solutions. Other possible solutions may include the reduction of energy usage and utility bills by introducing integrated photovoltaic systems, alerting consumers about their energy usage, using energy-efficient devices (e.g., light-emitting diode (LED) lamps), replacing conventional devices with smart devices (e.g., remotely controllable sockets), and adopting intelligent energy management systems that control smart devices.
The project’s objectives are as follows:
This project will present the design and development of a wireless smart socket system using Raspberry Pi, Arduino microcontroller, and LoRa wireless modules.
A hardware prototype will be built, and different experiments will be conducted to test the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed system.
The first experiment exhibits the accuracy of the monitored power from the proposed socket, whose values closely match those of the standard PQA monitor readings with less than 6% error. The second experiment reveals that the central controller can successfully coordinate and control multiple smart sockets based on user-defined control routines. The system will provide effective bidirectional communication capabilities.
The range covers the LoRa communication protocol is a dependable alternative for the wireless communication between home appliances and a central controller for applications.
LoRa is a low-power wide-area network modulation technique. It is based on spread spectrum modulation techniques derived from chirp spread spectrum technology.
LoRa transmitter and receiver devices will be attached with the controller for data transfer.
The project implementation will be based on the following flow:
Smart power sockets for monitoring and controlling home appliances provides the following benefits:
The system is fully based on 4th Industrial revolution-based technologies like IoT, big data, and Artificial Intelligence. The project technical flow will be as under.
On the physical layer, various types of sensors and detectors will be used to sense the physical attributes. These sensors are connected to a single PCB board for data acquisition and for controlling mechanism relays are also there for switching.
