In traditional grid system and current energy metering infrastructure line losses are growing day by day. This project will enable smart net energy metering by using WIFI technology, user will not only able to view real time usage of energy but also will be able to sell excessive energy to utility which is produced in the vicinity of user. Either Renewable or nonrenewable energy resources can be utilized and controlled remotely through mobile application, the energy sold out to utility will be deducted from energy consumed from utility which enables dual way smart net energy metering system. Net metering makes residential solar energy system ownership even more attractive and affordable for many families. It can save homeowners hundreds more rupees per year on their utility bills, and it makes the process of accounting for the energy flowing to and from the utility simpler and easier to administer.
Project ObjectivesThe objectives of the project are: The general objective of this project is to design and build a IOT based Smart Net Energy Meter System for electricity utilities and consumers. In order to achieve the general objective, the following specific objectives are set;
- To design and build a prototype of a microcontroller-based energy billing meter.
- To incorporate a WIFI module into the energy billing system.
- To test and evaluate the performance of the prototype.
The IOT based Smart Net Energy Meter is a self-operating meter that detects the current in both sides if the home source is generating excess energy the excess energy will back to grid and if we generate less energy with respect to require energy we consume from utility source.

To allow real-time remote-control functions, monitoring of energy exchange between the utility grid and Renewable Energy Generation owners and to carry out net energy metering operations, a control unit was developed such that the Renewable Energy Generation prosumer can control and monitor the net-metering key parameters and protection operations. The control unit of the net energy metering device consists of a logically programmed Arduino Nano to conduct crucial functions for a sustainable power transfer: synchronized wireless data operations, sensor monitoring, ancillary graphic display, smart actuation, and miscellaneous net energy metering calculations. Figure illustrates a curtail workflow of the complete net energy metering control unit. The deployed current and voltage sensors at the utility grid and Renewable Energy Generation sites simultaneously transmit current and voltage data to the Arduino microcontroller wherein these values are used to calculate the voltage waveform, phase angle, total Renewable Energy Generation, total energy exported/imported to/from of the utility grid, instantaneous load demands, and synchronously provide the net energy cost shared or received from the utility. The computed values are then published wirelessly to the cloud through the libraries and protocols. The uploaded data at cloud is then transmuted to the high-resolution graphic widgets on the app and LCD for offline local data monitoring and real-time actions. In case of maintenance or technical faults, the remote-control access allows Renewable Energy Generation owner to terminate the connection between Renewable Energy Generation and utility grid using electromechanical relays.
