Greenhouses are the structures used for the vegetation purposes from the ancient times. They provide micro climate for the plants which results in quality crops production and enhanced yield. Traditional methods for greenhouse farming includes manual inspection, non-automated agriculture and the absence of artificial climate control results in inefficient cultivation, increases human labor and time consuming. The emerging field of Internet of Things (IoT) is automating the various aspect of daily life. It also has a greater impact on agriculture. By utilizing the concept of IoTs in the greenhouses; automation, remote monitoring and control of the climate parameters of greenhouses can be achieved. 

Project Objectives

We will attempt to design a system through which climate parameters (temperature, humidity, ambient light and soil moisture level) can be controlled remotely and monitor the data collected from the sensors over the internet through web server.

Project Implementation Method

The proposed design comprises on a monitoring and control system for a traditional greenhouse by introducing the concept of smart agriculture based on internet of things (IoTs). The system consists of various sensors through which the data will be acquired. Then a controller takes the data from these sensors and processes it and based on this data, control signals will be given to the actuators which then will maintain or control the climate parameters. The data collected will then be transmitted to the cloud server through which one can remotely monitors the status and can also control the system over the internet. This combination of sensors, controllers and actuators can be termed as a sensor node which can transmits and receives the data. Multiple sensor nodes can be deployed as isolated greenhouses and can be connected to a cloud server.

Benefits of the Project

The main purpose of selecting this project is to promote the use of technology in the agricultural sector of Pakistan. Our main target are the local farms. Farm owners can make more benefits from this project as the agriculture will become more reliable and one can monitor and control the parameters of the environment remotely. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A prototype will be made in order to miniaturize the large sized greenhouse. The structure will be made out of wood and the plastic sheets will be used for covering. Inside of the greenhouse will be divided into two isolated sections. Each section will have rows to sow the seeds of plants. The soil moisture level of the plants will be monitored using the moisture sensor. The humidity and temperature of both the sections are monitored using the temperature and humidity sensors. The data acquired will be processed by the microcontrollers (Arduino uno) and using the ethernet connection this data will be sent to the online web server by the microcontroller. An automated irrigation system will be deployed using solenoid valves and small waterpumps that can be controlled remotely from the same web server. A couple of fans will be used for the ventillation purposes for heating and cooling the greenhouse. For heating, heating elements will be used. cooling is done by simple traditional method of air flow.
