IOT Based Smart Energy Meter
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryElectrical energy is the essential of our daily life and its proper consumption is user's responsibility. Proposed project is about efficient energy metering on domestic level.
Energy metering now a days faced several problems like:
- Human involvement in meter reading causes many errors while calculating the electricity bill.
- There is no any proper energy monitoring system for supplier as well as consumer end which causes energy theft in many areas.
- Available energy meter has manufacturing cost around 6 to 7 thousand Pakistani rupees.
- Also, commercial energy meter has no any security which led to illegal meter tempering activities.
- Current energy metering is very much time consuming because it is totally dependent upon human involvement.
- In most of the areas where human approach is unavailable so energy metering I very difficult task which creates many problems.
So, to overcome all mentioned problems, we proposed a smart energy meter which measure the instantaneous voltage current and calculates the power consumption units. Then upload these values to the cloud server where authority can monitor the energy consumption of each consumer through proper IoT Dashboard as well as consumer can regularly check its energy consumption through a mobile application (Android).
Project ObjectivesAim
Design and Fabricate an Iot Based Single-Phase Digital Smart Energy Meter..
Object
- Fabricate a digital single-phase meter.
- Upgrade Digital Meter to to IOT based Smart Energy Meter.
- Reduse the fabrication cost.
- Elimnate the human involvement.
- intectualize the smart meter to detect the energy theft.
Our project flow is given as under;
1. Literature review/Data gathering & brain storming
- IEEE research paper (including conference and transaction paper) and journals.
- Regular consultation with mentors who already working on smart meter.
- Review of Datasheets of IC’s used (M90E26 etc.)
2. Initial circuit will be verified by simulation.
3. Designing of prototype
- Design PCB Board of digital single-phase energy meter using IC (M90 E26).
- Compare the results of fabricated meter with commercial meter.
- Upgrade the energy meter IOT based using ESP 12 / ESP 8266 12E, Wi-fi module with Arduino microcontroller.
- Design the webpage & Android Application for real time energy monitoring.
4. Theft Detection (Future Plan).
5. Conclude the FYP with the Thesis writing.
Foloowing are the benefits of IoT Based Smart Energy Meter:
- prototype will measure instantaneous voltage and current and then calculate the electric power consumed in terms of Units.
- Calculated electrical energy can be monitored through an IoT Dashboard for remote monitoring by substation.
- Also, consumer can check regularlly its energy consumption through an Android mobile Application.
- Prototype will be secured from any illegal meter tempering through Sms prompt.
- Proposed energy meter is cost efficient as compared to already available commercial energy meter.
- Energy theft can also be detected through the smart meter.
Optocoupler PC817 is used to transfer electrical signal to the ADC.
ADC will convert voltage & current signal to Digital.
Energy Metering IC M90E26 is used for calculation of instantaneous voltage & current.
Microcontroller will calculate the electrical power consumed.
Wi-Fi module ESP8266 is used to transfer measured values to the server cloud.
IoT Dashboard will use for remote energy monitoring from substation.
Mobile App will be used by consumer for proper energy consumption monitoring.
