Project Summary

In this project, we will Design an E-bike and develop a system to collect data using IoT sensors for optimal battery usage.

Electric bikes and Electric cars are associated with the range-anxiety. It means the rider, or the driver is always anxious about the potential range that can be achieved with the available electric power. We plan to mitigate this problem in our project.

In this project we are proposing to install multiple sensors over the electric bike. These sensors will sense the current, voltage and power consumption of the bike. Moreover, the location, speed and distance covered will be calculated. It will help in determining the range and potential speed the rider can achieve with the available battery power. We will display the data to the driver and also analyze it to further refine an e-bike product.

We plan to extract the sensor data using microcontrollers. These controllers have built-in ADCs (analog-to-digital converters). The data extracted will be stored in the memory. Furthermore, we plan to upload it to the cloud. We will do extensive data analytics over the cloud. In the future, we also plan to collect data from many e-bikes simultaneously and provide an uber like ride-sharing services.

The final product will consist of many bikes and their data will be analyzed over the cloud. The data analytics over the cloud will determine how much Watt (power consumption) per Kilometer per rider is achieved. It will bring in more efficient solutions like the optimal speed on the road, the optimal weight, and finally determine the efficient routes.

Project Objectives

  • The first objective is to design a system that can determine if the rider of Electric bike will reach the destination with the available power in battery or not.
  • The second objective is to determine, how much speed is allowed for the rider to reach the destination.
  • The third objective is to determine how much weight the rider is allowed to carry with the available power in the battery. 
  • The fourth objective will be to display the first three objectives to the rider in real-time, i.e., Range, Speed, and weight. The goal will be achieved by using the display over the bike. The rider will be able to see it during the ride.

Project Implementation Method

As shown in the above diagram, the Electric Vehicle consists of a high voltage battery. This battery is connected to the BMS (Battery Management System). The BMS is used for two purposes, one is to charge the battery, and secondly is to provide an interface to a motor. The motor is used to power the two wheels as shown in the figure.

In Figure 2, the e-bike system is shown. The motor used is BLDC. It is installed at the rear wheel of the bike.

As shown above in figure 3, the data acquisition system is shown. It consists of three current sensors that determine how much current the BLDC motor is consuming.

Similarly, another current sensor is used to determine the total current from the Battery to the Motor-drive. We also need a voltage sensor that determines the Voltage available in the battery. These two sensors are used to determine the total power consumption in real time.

As shown above in figure 4, the table shows all the sensors that will be used to collect the data. This data will be sent over the 3G or 4G internet to could platform like AWS.

  • Mitigating the problem of Range-Anxiety for e-bike systems.
  • Optimization of power consumption.
  • Efficient use of available power in battery.
  • Promoting Green energy and zero pollution.
  • Mitigating would pollution on the roads.
  • Saving foreign exchange reserves. It is used otherwise to import expensive fossil fuels.
  • Reducing the import bill.
  • Indigenous technology development and skill enhancement in the area of Green electric revolution. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final product will consist of an E-bike with a full-fledge system of Data acquisition. It will be ready to drive on the road. It will be regarded as the first prototype. After several field tests, we can go towards the commercialization and production of our E-bike system.

It will be able to drive around 70Km in one charge. Total charge time will be 1 hour, and charging will cost 2 units (2 KWhr)
