Nowadays, the number of elderly people has increased. Some live with their children, some live in the adult foster home and some even live by themselves. The problem arises when the elderly people lose their ability to walk. Not everyone can be present to help them at all time. This project is built to help those who have trouble using their feet to walk around due to some difficulties such as helpless elderly people or people who met with accidents and end up with paralyzed legs. Project is designed to develop amulti-functional wheelchair to controls its movement. Microcontroller is the main controlling component that controls the whole wheelchair. The control interfaces which are app control, joystick control, voice control and hand gesture are used to control the wheelchair movement. Wheelchair is also provided with obstacle detection system which works if an emergency condition occurs. A patient care system is also designed in this wheelchair which helps the caretakers to understand the instructions given by disabled person. Wheelchair is also provided with heart rate measuring system. An additional feature of the designed system is the live streaming and location tracing.  Using live streaming location and video of a wheelchair can be easily accessible by a person monitoring at home. A camera is placed in front of the wheelchair whose output can be seen by the person sitting at home. This product not only allows the handicapped people to control the wheelchair by themselves without help from others but also allows other people to use the android phone to control the wheelchair. A patient care system is also incorporated in it to provide the ease for the disabled person. The designed wheelchair also provides Qibla direction for the Muslims to pray.

Project Implementation Method

Project circuit is made with the designed developer board i.e. I/O board, two motor driver module (BTS 7960), Bluetooth module, accelerometer, joystick, digital compass, keypad, ultrasonic sensor, LCD display& camera module. PWM pins for both motor driver are connected to microcontroller for PWM output configuration. The R-PWM and L-PWM of motor driver 1are connected to Pin D3 and D6while pin D10 and D13 are used for motor driver 2.Direction of the motors are controlled using R-EN and L-EN pins. Direction pins of motor driver 1 are connected to pin D4 and D7 of the microcontroller while D11 and D14 are used for motor driver 2. Two batteries of 12V sealed acid lead is used forpower supply for the DC motors. Pin D0 and D1 are used for Bluetooth module to transmit and receive data to and from microcontroller. Power supply for the Bluetooth module are from +5V and GND pins of the microcontroller. The SDA and SCL pins of accelerometer are connected to analog pin A4 and A5 of the microcontroller respectively. The X and Y coordinates of the joystick are connected to A0 and A1 of the I/O board respectively. The SDA and SCL pins of digital compass are attached to analog pins A6 and A7of the microcontroller respectively. The keypad used for patient care system is connected to D32 to D39 pins of the microcontroller. Heart rate sensor pin is connected to A9 pins of the microcontroller. And the mode selector pin is connected to A8 pin of the microcontroller Ultrasonic sensors used for the obstacle detection are connected to D70 to D79 pins of the microcontroller. LCD display is connected to digital pins D26 to D31.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We have implemented multi-functional wheelchair which has various advantages. The designed wheelchair contributes to the self-dependency of handicapped people. It is operating in different modes i.e. mobile control mode, joystick mode, gesture mode and voice recognition mode. This Wheelchair is economical and can affordable to common people. We have also add new technology in this wheelchair. This system designed is highly effective for the disabled people. It will also display the Qibla direction for the Muslims to offer prayer. This type of multi-functional wheelchair can made the person independent through the use of patient care system offering different modes of operation to the user. Heart rate measuring system is also incorporated in this system. The running cost of this designed system is also lower making it efficient.  It does not require any external help and is simple to operate. It is built to help the disabled become independent and is used for creating a connection between communication and hardware requiring less effort for controlling the wheelchair through specific mode, offering live streaming and location trace feature, avoiding obstacles that comes in the surrounding of the wheelchair.
