Intelligent waste management
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryWith the rapid development and increasing population, the disposal and collection of waste is becoming problematic to be carried out with proper management. So, to avoid these daily routine problems, the intelligent waste management is introduced. The bins are installed with sensors and data is continuously being exchanged between the location and the middleware. When the variables set for waste collection meet the criterion, the system is notified. These values from sensors are stored in cloud. The driver is notified, along with the optimized route. The system is built in a way that it molds itself time-to-time depending on different events occurring.
The concepts of IoT and Machine Learning makes the system super-efficient. Bins are evacuated on the basis of various variables like fill level, weight of container etc. thus the surrounding will become better and most of the problems will be lessened.
Project ObjectivesIn our country, waste collection process is not well-organized as there is no proper system for daily routine information of collection. The waste collection trucks wander from home to home to collect waste, that ultimately is a waste of time, fuel and a load on the traffic. This problem can be resolved by introducing a real-time monitoring system for waste collection. Following are the objectives of the proposed system:
- Periodic exchange of data from bin locations to the cloud through LoRaWAN.
- Data stored and further processed in cloud for prediction and analysis purpose.
- Optimized routes are generated for the collections of waste from target area.
The intelligent waste management is a real-time predictive waste collection system based on the concepts of IoT and machine learning. A dustbin is installed with a bunch of sensors. These sensors are specifically chosen to gather certain data from the dustbin that will later be used for taking decision of waste collection. The sensors gather data and sends it to the middleware through Wi-Fi (LoRaWAN). This data gathered is saved on the cloud. The data on cloud is analysed so that further decisions can be made.
A suitable algorithm is used to do predictions on the data gathered, and the system is made in such a way that it modifies itself time-to-time based on the data and environment. For example, the weight sensor detects a heavy object thrown in the bin at a certain location; this data is continuously exchanged between the location to middleware time to time. Predictions for future are made based on analysis of collected data. If an unusual behaviour is seen, it takes it as a risk and notifies the driver to evacuate the supposed bin. But if this unusual behaviour is repeatedly observer, the system learns and adapts new corresponding strategy to analyse this kind of data for future.
The next step after data analysis is notifying the driver about the target location. and for that targeted area, an optimized route is calculated using a suitable algorithm. So, in short, the notification comprises of the location and the optimal route, and the driver now collects the waste and later report the admin.
Benefits of the ProjectBy the implementation of the intelligent waste management system we will have following benifits:
- Less fuel consumption because of the use of optimal routes.
- Time saved due to collection of waste from the detected locations only.
- Data collected from different locations are stored on the cloud so that they can be analyzed for reflective programming in future.
- Environmental conditions improved, and different type of pollutions reduced.
- Awareness created among people about the smart city and its domain, making it successful to make a smart city out of a normal one.
- By the help of concepts, to be implemented in this project, different environmentally friendly measures will be taken to improve the system like installing various dustbins depending on the type of waste.
Following are the technical details of final deliverables:
- The node must be embedded with LoRa so that it can connect with the LoRaWAN router for communication of data.
- The website will be compatible with most of the browsers.
- Location must be enabled to locate the target areas (map).
