Project Summary

Civil Engineers faced difficulties to supervise the infrastructure safety of buildings and bridges.  In Pakistan modern technology based machinery is highly lacking. Decades are passed but buildings dangerous spots like cracks, holes etc are never inspected. In this project, we are proposing to design unmanned aerial vehicle to detect and capture the danger spots on infrastructure by using image processing. It would fly on line of sight, first person view and autonomously as per requirement and on the basis of degree of infrastructures. On the basis of outcome, it will be analyzed, later take decisions, how to overcome the danger spots. In same UAV system we may add autonomous feature in which it will fly by following way points defined to it on straight path without human interaction. The overall target is to ensure the regular and effort less monitoring of buildings and bridges safety.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of the project are as follows:

  • To design an unmanned aerial system.
  • To device a mechanism able to inspect civil engineering infrastructures such has buildings, bridges using image processing. Image processing will be done by using python because it is the fastest. Not a minor delay would be accpetable in this case. 
  • Drones are equipped with sensors, such as RGB, multispectral, thermal, and they can capture aerial data in a short time.

New technologies like drones offer a platform to scale up the social impact of development projects. There is big opportunity for organizations to maximize its development impact by getting the most accurate data from the field, analyzing it, and using the information to make decisions on project design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. Technology can transform the way development organizations help their communities by enabling them to increase operational efficiency, improve risk assessment and risk control capability, enhance accuracy in data gathering and data processing, and increase cost-efficiency.

Benefits of the Project

It will reduce the human labour and easy to detect dangerous spots on large buildings and long bridges. 
It will help to monitor progress of any building project by collecting issues in the form of pictures and videos. It reduces the safety risk .An end to end solution to capture the building cracks and forward at ground station to analyze and take decision accordingly.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are equipped with various kinds of advanced detecting or surveying systems, are effective and low-cost in data acquisition, data delivery and sharing, which can benefit the bridges and building of infrastructures. Applications of drones in monitoring construction and maintenance of infrastructures. The drone platform, detecting and surveying systems, and post-data processing systems will be introduced, followed by cases with details of the applications. Challenges from different aspects will be addressed. Opportunities of drones in infrastructure include but not limited to the following. Firstly, UAVs equipped with high definition cameras and detecting equipment are capable of inspecting the hard to reach infrastructure assets. Secondly, UAVs can be used as effective tools to survey and collect necessary information before infrastructure construction. The main challenges are: limited flight time, the robustness of signal, post data analyze, multi-drone collaboration, weather condition, distractions to the traffic caused by drones.
