Project Title

Implementation of optimized algorithm for adaptive GPS obfuscation

Project Area of Specialization Cyber SecurityProject Summary

In many military scenarios, precise location information may not be required by friendly forces for decision making. Such applications can benefit from location obfuscation technique to deceive the adversary.  Location obfuscation is defined as the means of deliberately degrading the quality of information about an asset’s location in order to protect its location privacy.  The main idea is to alter or hide the original location of the user while still being able to offer the appropriate level of service, while denying the same to an eavesdropper.  In addition, the user must have a way to determine the level of alteration that its location will suffer, depending on the amount of information that he is willing to give about the real position of deployed assets.

Project Objectives

This Project is envisaged to provide a proof of concept that the actual position of the UAV can be modified in such a way that the transmitted location can be used to deceive the enemy and at the same time actual position can be estimated at the desired base station.

Project objectives include:

  1. Literature review to study different location obfuscation techniques for GPS to identify their tradeoffs.
  2. Literature review of GPS guided weapons to understand their working principle and level of precision needed by them for effective operation.
  3. Selection of viable approaches and techniques for software implementation.
  4. Critical analysis of selected techniques through simulations for cost-benefit analysis.
  5. Incorporation of adaptive obfuscation mechanism to dynamically tailor the level of obfuscation based on mission requirements.
Project Implementation Method

This project is based on an adversary model,in which the loaction of the UAV can only be known by the communiaction going on between UAV and the base station,in which UAV is transmitting its location to the base station. First of all, the GPS receiver will be used to imitate the exact location of the UAV and then the exact location of the UAV will be modified through an algorithm in which, there will be offsetting, Mirror image, two or more UAVs at the same time while only single. So then transmitting that obfuscated location of the UAV to the base station ,which will be able to deceive the enemy threat which are sniffing the communication of the UAV with the base station.

Benefits of the Project
  1. Improvement in flight safety, location privacy, efficiency in military security.
  2. Commercial and Military Aviation Industry, Internet of Vehicles, Privacy of Satellite-driven Location Services, Location privacy in mobile communication devices, and privacy of navigation applications.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The expected deliverables of this project are:
1. Analysis of existing 2-D obfuscation techniques to identify inherent trade-offs.
2. Hardware Implementation of 3-D path obfuscation.
3. Field trials over a drone.
