Project Title

Implementation of Industrial Network Protocol for Real-Time Cyber-Attack Detection

Project Area of Specialization Cyber SecurityProject Summary

In this project Cyber-Physical Systems are studied and developed according to the need of the modern world. With the advancement in the field of technology the attacks evolve too which raises a crucial need of improvement of the cyber-physical systems. The cyberphysical systems are studied under attacks and the response of the system is observed. The communication between different devices of cyber-physical systems is the main objective of this thesis. A system is simulated on MATLAB Simulink which is hooked up with an industrial PLC via Modbus protocol. In this arrangement MATLAB Simulink is the controller of the system. We observe the system and introduce attacks in real time. Different types of attacks like Stealth attack, Re-play attack, Covert Attack and Dynamic False data injection attack are commenced in the system and the system is observed and modified in real-time.

Project Objectives

With the advancement in technology, the threats have evolved too. The most desirable trait of any sytem is reliablility. As there is not much work done on Cyber-Physical Systems they are much more prone to attacks than any other type of sytems which makes them less reliable. So, the objectives of this project are:

Project Implementation Method

In order to get better understanding of the model design and control, softwares like Simulink and OpenPLC were studied in detail. A model is designed in Simulink which communicates with a PLC through a communication protocol called Modbus. The Simulink model will send control commands and receive the output results through Modbus. After successful implementation of this Cyber-Physical System different attacks will be introduced to the system and its behavior will be studied. This system will be best optimized to tackle with these kinds of attacks.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits of this project are as follows:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A Cyber-Physical System in which Simulink acts as a controller and commands a PLC in Real-Time via Modbus. The control model is designed and simulated on Simulink Desktop Real-Time and then it communicates with Modbus through a communication module specially designed for Modbus. This is a two-way communication module hence data flows both ways i.e. Simulink reads values of sensors connected to the PLC and also gives commands to the actuators also connected to the PLC.
