Impact of Upstream Dams on Water Availability in Peshawar Basin
Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryThis study focuses upstream dams on Kabul river in Afghanistan and its economic effects on unavailability of water in Peshawar and linked areas near Kabul river in Pakistan. Kabul River originates in the Hindu Kush Mountains in central Afghanistan and flows eastward cities of Kabul, Surobhi, and Jalalabad. The Kabul River run past Peshawar and Nowshera and joins the mighty Indus River near Attock, northwest of Islamabad. If Afghanistan builds more upstream dams on this river, impact will be strongest on Peshawar, Nowshera, and Charsada, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Decrease in water flow there will reduce water availability and crop productivity in the three currently fertile districts of Peshawar and linked areas with Kabul river. To find solution for water availability in Peshawar basin, use of water from Kabul river as drinking or household purposes will be focused and also lack of water availability from Kabul basin will be studied. Also, possible solutions for strongly impacts of upstream dams on Kabul river will be monitered using hydrological techniques in GIS & Remote sensing.
Project Objectives- Use the modelling approach to calculate the water availability to downstream of Warsak Dam.
- Identify the major gaps and suggest the possible solutions.
- Using Arcmap and QGIS software.
- Using hydrological techniques in GIS.
- Key gaps will be identified and highlighted to the policy makers to bridge these critical gaps.
- Water availability will be calculated based on real time scenarios and alternative sources will be identified to fulfill the requirements of water in the basin.
- Benefit sharing concept can be promoted as already being done in various basins of the world like Colorado River Basin as an example.
