Health Monitoring System Of Three Phase Induction Motor
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryInduction motor especially three-phase induction motor plays a vital role in the industry due to their advantages over other electrical motors. Therefore, there is a strong demand for their reliable and safe operation. If any fault and failures occur in the motor it can lead to excessive downtimes and generate great losses in terms of revenue and maintenance. Therefore, early fault detection is needed for the protection of the motor. In the current scenario, the health monitoring of the induction motor is increasing due to its potential to reduce operating costs, enhance the reliability of operation and improve service to the customers. This technique helps us in decision making whether to shut down the motor or keep it running as it does not lead to a huge loss to the company. It detects the fault when the fault is just started developing in the machine and gives us a signal over the display and sent to the control section to take a decision. The health monitoring of induction motor is an emerging technology for online detection of incipient faults. Online health monitoring involves taking measurements on a machine while it is in operating conditions to detect faults to reduce both unexpected failure and maintenance costs.
Project ObjectivesThe main objective is to increase the reliability of the motor application by using recent technological advancements. This work ensures the continuous monitoring and easy control of high horsepower induction motors used in a variety of industrial fields. By ensuring the system reliability abnormal conditions are easily identified and easily rectified. As Induction machines are used in nearly 90% of industries, economic data monitoring is required. The productivity of industries can be increased by doing the preventive maintenance of induction machines. By taking preventive measures the failure of the system and cost of high horsepower motors are protected.

Simply, condition monitoring uses several signals to predict three things. First, whether an asset will break. Second, how it will break, and third, the time you have to fix or replace the asset before it functionally fails. Armed with this information, you can schedule maintenance at a time that suits production.
- Avoid unplanned downtime: The ability to plan downtime in an industrial environment is hugely beneficial, as the true cost of unplanned downtime due to a failed asset is often wildly underestimated.
- Maximize Return on Investment:
predictive maintenance using condition monitoring allows you to maximize the return on investment in your mechanical assets. By monitoring the actual condition of your machine, you can inspect, fix or replace the machine only when it’s necessary, and not before.
Conversely, preventive maintenance requires the replacement of all machines after a certain period (or several running hours) regardless of whether they have started to show signs of a fault. By keeping your machines in action until it’s necessary to change or replace them, you can get more out of your machine, improve TCO (total cost of ownership), and maximize initial capital ROI.
- Maintenance engineers can act more efficiently:In a scenario where there has been a breakage, maintenance engineers are able to act faster using condition monitoring. Different motor signal patterns are indicative of different developing faults in the asset the motor is driving—so condition monitoring will help the maintenance engineer to focus on the right fault, and not waste time checking parts of the asset that are not broken. This ultimately makes the maintenance engineer faster and more effective at his or her job.
- Safeguard employee safety:By being able to determine when an asset will break, maintenance personnel can ensure safer work practices. Depending on the nature of the asset, a breakdown could be quite destructive, and could pose a threat to the safety of employees working around the asset. By using condition monitoring, maintenance personnel can plan maintenance before a motor break poses a potential threat to safety.
- Improve motor efficiency:with the help of this technique can detects itcan also detect when a motor is beginning to run less efficiently. As a result, you can focus your efficiency improvements on specific motors.
- Future-proofing your plant:Statistically, 20-40% of your maintenance personnel are likely to retire in the next 5 years. That means your ability to react to future unplanned downtime could suffer. This monitoring technique helps your maintenance team avoid unplanned downtime and maximize plant productivity in the future.
This proposal reviews aout the design and use of Health Monitoring system. As,Induction motors are more widely used in industries and other commercial establishments due to their rugged construction, economical operation, and reliable service. A pre-mature failure or rigorous maintenance with more downtime and costs of Induction motors are not acceptable in the present modern industrial era. So, HM is the technique that is being extensively used aims in reducing motor failures and maintenance costs. The practice of applicable conditions monitoring techniques and further corrective actions will increase the life of motors. Hence, a Health monitoring motor is required before its failure.
