The idea behind out project is to automate a media player with the help of our hand gestures. First we make the media player and than we apply the automation section on the media player. We are using different gestures of hand to control media player completly

Project Objectives

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a necessary part of everyday live. Computers are now the corner stone of technological development. The proposed system uses nothing more than a low-resolution webcam and it is able to track the user's hand in two dimensions and can recognize hand gestures, which are interpreted as media player functions and most laptops today are equipped with webcams. We will make a desktop application of media player that supports many audio and video compression methods and the file formats including mkv, mp3, mp4, avi. It will detect hand gesture and perform play and pause operations and all the operations of media player perform manually as well.

Project Implementation Method

There are generally two approaches for hand gesture recognition, which are hardware based, where the user must wear a device, and the other is vision based, which uses image processing techniques with inputs from a camera. The proposed system is vision based, which uses image processing techniques and inputs from a computer webcam.We are using Haar Cascade technology in our project for detecting hand. Haar Cascade is a machine learning object detection algorithm used to identify objects in an image or video and based on the concept of features proposed by Paul Viola and Michael Jones.

Benefits of the Project

This Project can interpret a user’s gestures in real time to perform all the  operation in media player (that is also the part of our project) using Haar Cascade in which we create our own XML of the gesture we want to detect to the gesture like palm and fist to play and pause the video. Media player can also operate manually.
