Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair for Disabled People
People with physical disabilities and partial paralysis always find it difficult to navigate through their habitat or their home without the assistance of someone. Often after paralysis or physical disability the wheelchair is the most common means of movement for such people.
These days joystick controlled wheel chair is available in the market whose cost range between Rs 80,000 to Rs 150,000. We have prepared this Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair in affordable price
So, we are proposing a wheelchair, which operates on some easy hand gesture. As it works on hand gestures this wheelchair does not require help of any other person for pushing it, hence handicapped or physically disabled person feel independent while moving from one place to other.
The proposed “Hand Gesture Controlled Wheelchair for Disabled People” is consisted of two modules:
1. Wheel Chair:
Receiving end, will receive the commands from movement of hand.
2. Hand Gesture:
Transmitting end, will send the instructions in the form of movement of hand.
Objectives: 1. The core objective of the proposed project is to build a System That Would Medically Help Physically Challenged People.
2. 24/7 remotely connected With Patient Attendant for Emergency Causes by means of wrist band having Arduino and accelerometer integrated circuit that will be able to send signals to the wheel chair.
3. To introduce an advance automated product In The Medical Market.
4. The System Is Wholly Portable Pertaining Wireless Technology.
The goal of this project is to control a wheel chair wirelessly for physically challenged people using a sensor called accelrometer .Accelerometer senses the movement of hand tilt and transmits signals towards microcontroller according to the direction of hand, using a medium of XBEE thatis Radio based frequency transmitter. For instance if the movement of hand is on the left side then the wheel chair will move in left directionor if the direction of hand is on the right side then the wheel chair will trun in the right direction. Wheel chair movement can be controlled in all basic direction. The device will be portable and the wirst band (having XBEE+ Accelerometer integrated Circuit) can easily be wearable by anyone. This project makes use of a mirco controller, which will be programmed in Embedded C/Assembly language. This chip will be capable of communicating with transmitter and recevier module. the controller is interfaced with motors to control the direction of the wheel chair. we've diveded our project into three major portion, consisting of the transmitting End (Hand Gesture Unit) ,The receiving End (Wheel chair Unit)
The percentage of disabled people has increased and the disability could be by birth or due to some medical or accidental reason. The most important benefit of this project is to make a hand gesture controlled wheel chair using accelerometer as sensor to help the physically disabled people in moving from one place to another just by giving direction from the hand. This Wheelchair will add on to the comfort and make the life of people bit easier.
Benefits to people who are: Paralytic person, who walk with the help of aid and to those who have lost sense of sensation in lower part of the body due to paralysis or other problems.
The proposed wheel chair can be used to provide benefits in the Causalities, for patients seating and mobility from one ward to another. It can also be used for paralyzed people giving them flexibility at their homes using hand gestures.
In order to evaluate the performance of the presented speech recognition system to drive the wheelchair following test done to test the effectiveness of the Voice-recognition to drive the wheelchair. The recognition rate of each Keyword word programmed to operate when spoken by the user is calculated by the following equation: RR% = Number of Recognized Words divided by Number of Tested WordsIn order to test the accuracy and effectiveness of the project, four volunteers were asked to become a part of testing of the project. Each volunteer was asked to give 10 commands and based on how many the commands are followed will give the result. The test was carried in silent and noisy environment by both male and female users. This test will determine the accuracy and effectiveness of the project.
