Vertical axis wind turbines are capable of utilizing wind from all directions, and does not require need yaw mechanisms, downwind coning or rudders to perform. Their generators can be mounted close to the ground, and are easily accessible. World is adopting different policy of energy transition, which aims to substitute fossil fuel from Renewable energy. to decreases CO2 emission in environment, however the major challenge is to design and develop a vertical axis wind turbine, which has a simple design, low operating torque and speed and Bidirectional, the savonius wind turbine appears to be best fit for such conditions, but it does have some drawbacks: low efficiency as all the vertical axis wind turbine has, when compare to horizontal axis wind turbine and high negative torque. Till now researchers aims to enhance the performances of savonius wind turbine, by optimizing the effects of different geometric parameters and by developing new design. The mechanical design to prove our concept was complimented by a functioning prototype of the Hub and rotor demonstrating the effectiveness of the power extraction mechanism.
Considering the lack of any suitable design tool for modeling the small scale wind turbines, the primary objective of this thesis is to design and develope an efficient SSWT. Using the proposed design tool, a small-scale wind energy portable turbine (SWEPT) will be designed and fabricated, which will operate near ground level where wind speed is below 5 m/s. SWEPT should not only be efficient and small in size but it should also 24 be simple, compact, and portable. It needs to produce at least the ampount of electrical power output to charge a 12v DC battery at the wind speed below 5 m/s. T
Traditional wind turbines requires huge barren lands for their implimentation. Since our primary objective is to design a turbine which will operate at very low wind speed and will be able to produce electricity. Therefore we have planned to implement it in the city areas on the rooftop of a building with minimum 5 floors.
1) Having a vertical axis, the Savonius turbine continues to work effectively even if the wind changes direction.
(2) Because the Savonius design works well even at low wind speeds, there’s no need for a tower or other expensive structure to hold it in place, greatly reducing the initial setup cost.
(3) The device is quiet, easy to build, and relatively small.
(4) Because the turbine is close to the ground, maintenance is easy.
The final deliverable will be a fully functioning wind turbine that will be able to produce minimum 50w with the wind speed of 4m/s.
