EyeCholestera Cholesterol Detection through Iris Images

Around 17.9 million people died due to CVD in 2016 which represents 31% of total deaths around the globe. Of these deaths, stroke and heart attack were the reasons for 85% of deaths. The main reason behind such coronary heart diseases (CHD) is high cholesterol. Cholesterol has three basic types i.e. Triglycerides, High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) and Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL) respectively. When there is too much LDL cholesterol in human body, then it tends to build walls in arteries that results in stroke and heart diseases and its major cause for atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries. Clinical trials in humans have shown that lowering levels of serum cholesterol (LDL & HDL) with diet or drugs decreases the subsequent incidence of fatal or nonfatal CHD. Checking cholesterol level clinically is expensive and time taking as patients pay charges and wait for their results. There isn’t any easy non-invasive and technology-based solution that provide accurate and cost-effective method to check cholesterol level on smartphone application. Our Project “EyeCholestera” will be a mobile based application where it will be easy to check cholesterol at pivot level by just clicking a clear image of patients’ eye. “EyeCholestera” application will enable user to click the HD image of patient’s eye and after that a cholesterol value will be calculated depending on the width of “sodium ring” formed around the iris of patient. This will help patients, patients’ guardian and doctors to check cholesterol level for initial screening and taking care of the health.
World Health Organization says that 17.9 million people died in 2016 which represents 31% of total deaths around the globe due to high level of cholesterol. This happed because there is unavailability of cholesterol monitoring solution that help people to check cholesterol level easily and everywhere. The proposed product has the potential to save a lot of innocent lives by making them aware about their cholesterol level which will enable people to consult a physician or to take important measures. This is going to be a mobile application with special lens sensor which even a lay patient can use it. This prime objective of this project is making an easy, cost efficient and time saving application to monitor cholesterol at pivot level.
Project Implementation begins with following major milestones. We aim to complete this project in the end of 2020. We are done with literature review that says cholesterol can be detected through iris image due to sodium ring formed around the iris. We are planning to improve an algorithm that claims to achieve 86.00% accuracy and came with the results which would make this application capable enough to detect cholesterol level. However, we are looking forward to make a mobile application software collaboration with lens sensors till end of 2020.
This project will be a very cost effective and time saving solution for the people around the globe. Every third person is affected from cholesterol and people neglect to check it due to a common thought that it is negligible why to waste time to check it. So, this project will create ease for them to check cholesterol level at very initial level which will not only save their time, but it will give them idea about their cholesterol condition at initial level. Another benefit that hit medical industry is that this application will be very helpful for doctors and their assistants to check the suspected person of cholesterol before suggesting medicine. Like doctors check blood pressure and temperature at initial level, this application will help them to check cholesterol by taking eye image of patient which will be very beneficial for initial screening.
Final deliverable will be a mobile application software for android operating system. User of application “EyeCholestera” will have to buy a macro lens adapter for taking HD images of iris and eye which will be a one-time cost. User will be able to login in the application and application will enable the user to check cholesterol level anytime with a single click of HD image of iris. Image of iris can be captured by fixing macro lens adapter to back camera of mobile and by placing camera near to eye then a HD image can be captured using macro lens. Once HD image captured then it will be sent to our cloud virtual machine where image will be analyzed and enhanced using image processing techniques and a cholesterol value will be calculated using deep learning algorithm. In any case of abnormality user will be notified.
