According to the study, approximately 5.6 million people or 1.9% of the population have difficulty or inability to move one or more upper or lower extremities. The number of persons who are paralyzed and therefore dependent on others due to loss of self-mobility is growing with the population. “Quadriplegia" is a type of paralyses in which patients are only able to move their eye and some facial expression, how those patients can operate wheelchair if their whole body is paralyzed except eye? For the patients of Quadriplegia we are constructing a wheelchair which can be operated by the movements of eye pupil.
Our project is for the paralyzed people, who are not able to operate their single limb but only their eyes because their brain stem is damaged. This project can be implemented at the hospitals for patients and also can be used for customized purposes and also it reduces the necessity of the attender. In this project we are using the image processing technique for operating the wheel chair with the help of eye pupil movement using pi camera and also providing the application of joystick as well. For the application of eye pupil localization we are performing image processing based on the raspberry pi where we are using different algorithms such as (Haar cascade algorithm, Canny edge detection etc.). To operate the wheelchair according to the eye pupil movement. This project is been constructed before but with the drawbacks of weight, cost, efficiency and not fully functional. We are going to provide more efficient, less cost and robust eye pupil controlled wheelchair having the modification of alerting system for the patients who can operate their fingers and call the attender.
Project Objectives- Our objective is to enable a paralyze patient self-reliant up to an extent so that dependability upon attendant can be reduced.
- To help paralyzed patients so that they can move by the help of wheel chair just by using their eye pupil movements and also by using joystick, without any hectic accessories.
- If we patient look upward the wheelchair will proceed forward, if look left the wheelchair will move left, if look right the wheelchair will move right tracking the eye pupil.
- To enable a method through which the patient can call the attendant for many tasks like if patient is hungry, thirsty or if there is emergency using push buttons attached on wheelchair.
- We are implementing image processing technique for tracking eye pupil using raspberry pi for processing and pi camera for taking input from the eye pupil.
- Commands taken as input provided by the eye pupil or joystick then it will be processed in the raspberry pi using (Haar cascade algorithm, Canny edge detection etc.).
- Action will be taken on motors of wheelchair based on the eye pupil commands.
- Using arduino interfaced with HC-05 Bluetooth module connected to the android application which will indicate the attender with respect to the push button.
- This project will be beneficial especially for the “Quadriplegia patients” as they will be able to operate wheelchair by using just their eye pupil and can move from one place to another.
- As the patient will feel independent by reducing the need of the attender to a certain extent.
- The self-esteem of the patient will be boost.
- Beneficial at the hospitals and also compatible for home use.
- Also providing the joystick in this wheelchair so that partially paralyzed patients will be able to utilize their ability to operate wheelchair.
- Altering the attender if there is any necessity of him to help out the patient.
he final deliverable of our project will be a wheelchair consisting of raspberry pi interfaced with pi camera for eye pupil controlled and joystick console with required power supply. Having IR sensors for edge detection.
For alerting system we are providing arduino connected to Bluetooth module and android application through which a patient will be able to call the attender.
