Project Summary

There have been many improvements made in the field of technology in the past decade, but there hasn’t been much progress in the field of wheelchairs that could help the patients to have the sense of independency. There are wheelchairs made for handicapped people that require minimum to maximum human effort. In order to create a wheelchair that would require no effort by the care giver or the patient and to be used by max number of patients with various injuries or diseases we have constructed the  “ Eye Movement Controlled Wheelchair “. This is a natural behavior that every human can do without an effort. This was specially constructed for the people who had the sickness called “ Quadriplegia “.

This sickness can be caused naturally or due to some injury in which the patient is paralyzed from the nec

k down, this injury can be caused due to accidents and can be found in new borns. There are many different

ways this injury is caused. It can only effect any specific body part to almost the entire body from the neck down

Project Objectives

To propose a wheelchair that will be controlled by the eye movement

To produce a wheelchair that can carry the patient indoors or outdoors with ease and to give him the sense of freedom

To provide reliable & user friendly system.

Project Implementation Method

Hardware implementation

This section describes how we implement the different component of project and how we interface them together.

Implementation of Web Cam:-

The component that we use as the webcam that is our initial form of input that will be used to detect the face and the eyes. This cam is attached on a moveable stand that can be adjusted according to the height of the patient. The cam will be attached to the laptop that will do our main image processing.

Implementation of Arduino Nano:-

The central brain of this project is the Arduino Nano.Through which we interface our different components and it also control the motor driver modules. First we interface controller with computer through the software name as “Arduino IDE”, and we burn our code in it.

After this we interface the different component with it.

Implementation of Motor Driver:-

TheBTS7960B motor controller follows the H-bridge configuration, which is handy when controlling the direction and rotation of the wheelchair.

Implementation of Components on the Main Chair:-

The main component on which we have implemented the whole system is the motor driven wheelchair known as Nutron R51LXP. This chair has been selected for its powerful 650 watt motors that are built in and attached to each of the back wheel that drives the chair. The weight limit we kept was 50kg but we have tested the limits and the wheelchair works perfectly with a patient of 90kg plus adding the extra added weight of the battery and laptop.

Implementation of Battery:-

As our wheelchair is an electrical machine so it requires an electric supply for its function, for this purpose we have used a 12V battery that gives supply to the motors.

Implementation of Laptop:-

The processor for image processing and giving further command to the arduino nano we have used a laptop on which we have used the software Open CV with Python in anaconda environment. Raspberry pi was another option that we used but it was very laggy when performing real time image processing.

Benefits of the Project

There are many key features of the project.

Patients can easily navigate their way indoors

 Easy to operate.

Less stress on the caregiver
