Project Summary

This study aims to calculate the performance of the ND of wet cooling tower (NDWCT) using first law (energy) and second law (exergy) of thermodynamics. Moreover, it determines the economic feasibility and sustainability of the ND Wet Cooling Tower. An appropriate mathematical model will be developed and simulated in software like Engineering Equation Solver, Solidworks & MATLAB, to calculate water savings, performance and payback period of additional investment. The simulation results would have a good agreement with the experimental outcomes. The installation of modified heat Air-Air to Air-Liquid exchanger will improve the performance of WCT by up to 11% because the consumption of water to air ratio increases. Moreover, the exergy destruction in the NDWCT is 1.23 MW lower than the conventional WCT. Additionally, the heat exchanger costs k$30.7 to save an annual fuel cost of k$72 which could be recovered within a payback period of 0.37 years. Lastly, the environmental assessment proves that the NDWCT relinquishes the particulate matter emission by 0.042 g/s.

Project Objectives

  1. The objective of ND Wet Cooling Tower is to cool the hot water coming from industry and make hot water in usable condition.
  2.  Decrease the water waste in evaporation.
  3. Decrease air pollution.
  4. Save marine life by recycling hot water.

Project Implementation Method

  1. First of all, we will buy the all parts which we require (Such as, Temperature measuring devices, Pressure measuring devices, Humidity measuring devices, Blower Fan, Air to Liquid Heat exchanger, Body parts of structure, exhaust fan and control system.)
  2. Second step will be of fabrication of structure 
  3. Then assembly of parts 
  4. install measuring instruments  
  5. check results
  6. compare results with previous results
  7. Thesis/Report of Project.

Benefits of the Project

  1.  By using Cooling tower, we can decrease the fresh water consumption 
  2. we can decrease air pollution by decreasing evaporation of water using air to liquid heat exchanger.
  3. we can save marine life, by hot water handling

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our project is an industrial based project, that will be beneficial and economical for industry. it may take up to expected 6 months to make it ready to work. it will be delivered within 6th month to the department of Mechanical Engineering Mehran University of Engineering and technology Shaheed Z.A Bhutto campus Khairpur Mir’s
