Currently, the healthcare industry is using Electronic Health Record (EHR) for storing and sharing medical records. In various healthcare organizations, the EHR data sharing is still done through mail and other local services because of the shortage of trustable and efficient health sharing and storing mechanisms. This leads to not only a sever threat to patient records but also delays in the treatment of the patient. To overcome these problems, a consortium blockchain-based electronic medical records system is the primary solution. Blockchain is a decentralized framework providing a cryptographic guarantee of data integrity, security, privacy, and smart contracts for data access. This research project introduces various aspects of storing and sharing patient records using Hyperledger Fabric, this will not only ensure the patient's integrity, privacy, and data security but also be opposed to the tampering and deletion attacks during the operational process. 

Project Objectives

Blockchain have been an interesting area which provides benefits to many industries in different aspects.With the passage of time advancement in technology provides good features and security in different sectors also in healthcare sector offered by EHR(Electronic Health Record)  and EMR(Electronic Medical Record).But they are still facing issues regarding the user data ownership and data integrity.The solution of this problem provides the Consortium Blockchain which provides the decentralised,secure and temper-proof platform for storing the health record and then by private key of the user that record can be accessed by the Doctor.Also any change made by the Doctor will be get saved on the Blockchain.

In the past, for health record paper based methods were used which were insecure,not tamper-proof e.t.c. Also that type of record creates inconsistency and redundancy in  the data as patients visit multiple health care centres.

Then EHR systems were designed to combine both paper based records and EMR.These systems were used by the clinics and healthcare centres for health records which provides the secure and cost efficient based health record system but it also fails to provide data integrity and good user friendly experience.The major other issues that it faced are Interoperability (Exchange of information between different systems),Information Asymmetry and Data Breaches.

Project Implementation Method

Our project consists of three parts.

1. Front-end in react js

2. Backend Blockchain 

3. Node js application to get from blockchain to deliver to the front end

Backend Blockchain network will be set up using the hyperledger framework which is build by IBM after setting up the network chain codes are written for all use cases.Front-end is build in React js and provided the common point access to all use cases. Through Api's data will get from node js application and node js application will get data from blockchain. We are using the permissioned blockchain whose own database which is kuchdb.

KEY FEATURES OF BLOCKCHAIN

1) DECENTRALIZATION

With blockchain the information is distributed across the network rather than at one central point. This also makes the control of information to be distributed and handled by consensus reached upon by shared input from the nodes con nected on the network. The data that was before concentrated at one central point is now handled by many trusted entities.

2) DATA TRANSPARENCY

Achieving data transparency in any technology is to have a trust based relationship between entities. The data or record at stake should be secured and temper proof. Any data being stored on the blockchain is not concentrated at one place and is not controlled by one node but is instead distributed across the network. The ownership of data is now shared and this makes it to be transparent and secure from any third party intervention.

3) SECURITY AND PRIVACY Blockchain technology uses cryptographic functions to pro vide security to the nodes connected on its network. It uses SHA-256 cryptographic algorithm on the hashes that are stored on the blocks. SHA stands for Secure Hashing Algo rithm, these hashes provide security to the blockchain as data integrity is ensured by them. Cryptographic hashes are strong one way functions that generate checksum for digital data that cannot be used for data extraction. This makes blockchain as such a decentralized platform made secure by the crypto graphic approaches which makes it to be a good option for privacy protec of certain applications.

The deliverable of our project will be web app for three use cases doctor, patient and admin.
