EEG based Brain Machine Interface BMI
Project Area of Specialization NeuroTechProject SummaryThis project describes the development of Electroencephalogram (EEG) based Brain Computer Interface . Brain Computer Interface (BCI) or Brain Machine Interface (BMI) is a direct Communication path between the brain and any device. The best method of recording brain's activity is Electroencephalogram (EEG). The signals of EEG are also called Brainwave signals. EEG signals can be captured by devices such as Emotiv EPOC Headset , Neurosky Mindwave sensor Headset etc. The EEG signals are processed in a manner to differentiate the mental commands that are thinking by the user. After obtaining the mental command, it is used to produce the electrical control signals for controlling the different devices such as wheelchair, robotic arm, quadcopter etc.
Project Objectives- To develop an interface between brain and machines to benefit those people who are paralyzed and are unable to move their body. Through this device even the disable person can physically communicate and navigate themselves around.
- To make an EEG based brain-controlled device which operates through human cognitions.
- To make a computer based BCI system that encodes the intentions generated by th brain, and the BCI, after training, decodes the signals and translates them into commands to an output device that accomplishes the user's intention.
Electroencephalogram captures the brain signals and these EEG signals are transmitted wirelessly to PC (Personal Computer). PC software process the EEG signals and converts into mental commands (e.g. forward, backward, left, right etc ) and then sends to the controller which in turn operates the devices such as Wheelchairs, Crutches, Robotic Arm, Quadcopters etc.
Benefits of the Project- It provides new and effective solutions by directly using the brain instead of joystick or buttons for the people who lost their hands and mobility.
- It processes the brain signals for controlling purposes.
- It uses portable eeg device that enables capturing of measurments in real time.
- Overcoming the difficulties with EEG readings which has large susceptibility to motion artifacts.
EEG device is portable and noninvasive . BCIhas input (electrophysiological signals that result from brain activity monitoring) that is obtained by eeg device and wirelessly send to computer for processing on the signal, elements that transform input into output and a protocol that determines its operation includes the coversion of brain signals into commands that controlls the device and output (device actions ).
