Project Summary

The future of clean and efficient energy in Pakistan greatly relies within renewable energy system. The offshore wind energy potential in Pakistani waters is huge. However, the dynamic and rough sea conditions within Arabian sea will make it difficult for future wind turbines to with stand enormous wave impact both of wind and sea waves. Therefore, it is very important to develop pre numerical modeling and simulations that can contribute in developing any future wind turbines in Arabian sea. Fatigue loading on the wind turbines, sea climate, performance of the wind farm and modelling of flow characteristics inside the wind farm, rough seabed topology are some of the important factors that need to be studied in detail. In this final year project, we develop a code/toolbox that will help researchers simulate different wind and wave scenarios and their impact on the wind turbines. These simulations will also help understand following important factors:

  • What happens in the near vicinity of the turbine?

  • How pressure variations are going to impact turbines in dynamic climate nature of Arabian sea?

  • How different waves can critically impact the structure of wind turbine?

  • How can we relate Arabian seabed topography with the wind and wave dynamics in close connection with future wind farms?

Project Objectives

1) . Wave resistance model for single wind turbine structure
2) . Wave resistance model for multiple wind turbines (wind farm)
3) . Model that will estimate velocity differential on the opposite sides of wind blades
4) . Model that will predict wake effect
5) . Different sea climate models for possible wind farm localities
6) . Model interlinking the topography, sea conditions with different designs of wind turbine farms
7) . Object oriented framework for solving partial velocity differentials along wind turbines

Project Implementation Method

Technologies used will be Global Mapping Tool (GMT) to create mappings of the targetted areas. We are currently working on creating a Wind Turbine model that can be implemented to carry out the simulations based on the data we accumulated through those maps. This turbine model will be created in Matlab/Simulink.

Benefits of the Project

Local area survey that shows accurate information of the energy yield from our offshore region.

Finding viable regions in the offshore coastline of Pakistan where we can deploy wind turbine systems.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our custom made software that can carry out simulations and make predictions of energy outputs with variable wind data.

Research paper that sheds light on how to make accurate mapping data along with predictions about the viablity of Karachi and Gawadar coastal region for offshore wind energy harvesting.
