Project Summary

In the field of biomedical research, the development of small, safe, and long-lasting implantable devices in the human body is a very active field of research and development.

Among these, electronic Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs) need electrical power to maintain their functionality in the human body.

Energy Harvesting (EH) is very valuable tool to prolong lifespan of such IMDs.

A rectenna based device can harness sufficient power through EH for batteries to increase device lifespan.

An approach to making a prototype of this rectenna based power source for these devices will be presented here which may help improve the electronic IMD technology in general.

Project Objectives

Objectives:

  • To simulate several Rectenna designs targeting various EM frequency bands.
  • To develop selected prototype Rectennas.
  • To experimentally verify performance of the prototype rectennas.
  • To compare and analyze performance of developed rectenna prototypes and optimize their performance.

Project Implementation Method

Proposed Methodology:

  • The rectenna, basically, consists of two major portions:

                  Antenna           &           Rectifier

  • Patch antenna will be designed on GSM/ISM band at 1.2 GHz or 2.45 GHz and/or Med-Radio band at 402-405 MHz frequency. A rectifier circuit will be used to rectify power coming from the antenna. Here, we will use an impedance matching network to maximize power. It will be done by matching the output impedance of the antenna with the input impedance of the rectifier. An impedance matching network is the combination of resistor, inductor, and capacitor.
  • Firstly, simulations will be done by using CST studio for antenna design and multi-sim/Proteus (or Advance Design System) for impedance matching network and rectifier circuit designing. After this, simulations will be shaped into hardware prototype rectenna and it will be tested.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Development of a Prototype Rectenna to Harvest Energy to Increase Life Span of Energy Storage Devices within Biomedical Implants:

Delieverables will include Software/Hardware prototype of rectenna. All the simulated prototypes will be designed and then will be processed to hardware implementation. 

One of our component is currently unavailable in local as well as international market due to corona penedamic. In this case, only simulated prototype will be Delivered.
