Project Summary

The following Project is about the design and Development of a Digital Audio Mixer board capable of recieving 8 audio signals and output the combined audio signal. The audio mixer board will first recieve the signals, the signal conditioning, Filtration, DSP will be performed on all eight of the signals. The mixed signal will be taken as output on a single channel.

Project Objectives

We have to acheive the following objectives:

  •  Input signal level of 5-15 Vpp
  • Band pass filter for each channel with cutoff frequencies between 300-3000Hz
  • Output signal level of 10 Vpp with volume control
  • Turning any or all of the particular inputs On/Off

Project Implementation Method

Audio mixer board is a multichannel digital audio mixer built around ADAU1452 of SigmaDSP Digital Audio Processor family which is from Analog Devices . The board can mix up to 8 analog input channels and output single analog channel. The analog input audio signals are signal conditioned, converted to digital form using analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and then sent to the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) for processing like mixing and filtering. The real-time configuration of the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) can be changed by sending different parameters to the chip. These parameters define the filter and mixer i.e. sending the information that represents the filter cutoff or the intensity level of each channel. These parameters can be sent i.e. the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip can be controlled and configured in three ways first two are for live configuration;

  • With the use of a computer and a special interface cable
  • With the use of a microcontroller
  • By storing the parameters on an EEPROM

 The audio system schematic is designed in the Sigma Studio on a computer, when compiled it generates the configuration parameters that define the filtration or the mixture meanwhile the analog input channels, after conversion from analog-to-digital, are sent to the Digital Signal Processor (DSP). These parameters are then programmed to an EEPROM using a microcontroller or sent directly to the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) using a microcontroller or special interface cable. After the mixing and filtration the resulting output channels are converted from digital-to-analog form for reproduction.

Benefits of the Project

In Aeronautical Industry communication is the key for the safety of many lives; it guides the pilot throughout the flight and prevents many accidents from happening. A pilot needs to maintain the communication from ground stations and at the same time has to monitor the condition of the aircraft during the flight. There comes the need of the audio mixer through which the pilot can listen to various communication channels as well as the alarming beeps. The digital audio mixer can make clear communication possible because it is noise immune and the filtration of the signals can be done effectively using digital techniques. A digital audio mixer is designed that will be capable of receiving eight audio signals and output the combined audio signal. This Project is not only benificial in Aeronautical industry but also in Audio Engineering.
