Project Title

DEVELOPMENT, IMPROVEMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF SCHEMES FOR CYBER PHYSICAL ATTACKS AND FAULT DETECTION

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are employed in almost every area of life due to its autonomy and efficiency. Ongoing advances in science and engineering improve the link between computational and physical elements by means of intelligent mechanisms, increasing the adaptability, autonomy, efficiency, functionality, reliability, safety, and usability of cyber-physical systems. CPS forms the industry's backbone. The industry is extending quickly, and the extreme need for this advancement is the requirement for coordinated and least vulnerable cyber-physical structures. The sector is heading for their new Industry 4.0' version. All uses control systems for automation, whether it's a vehicle or some major industrial facility. One can control its actions by having a plant's mathematical model coupled with its control system. Thus, modeling our plant to automate it is very useful. The project is aimed at designing and implementing schemes for cyber-physical attacks and faults that occur in Single Area Systems and in Two Area Systems and schemes to isolate the faulty area from the healthy system in case if the fault occurs.

Project Objectives

Our main objective is to develop techniques and schemes for fault detection and improvements in cyber-physical systems.

Project Implementation Method

we are aiming to perform the implementation of our project using OPAL-RT. OPAL-RT is the world leader in the development of PC/FPGA-based real-time simulators, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing equipment, and Rapid Control Prototyping (RCP) systems to design, test, and optimize control and protection systems used in power grids, power electronics, motor drives, automotive, trains, aircraft, and various industries, as well as R&D centers and universities. More specifically we will be using HYPERSIM Real-Time Simulation.

Power grids are undergoing dramatic increases in complexity as we evolve from traditional, centralized power generation and radial distribution to 21st-century grids featuring highly meshed networks, new HVDC interconnections, distributed energy resources (DER) and smart technologies.

HYPERSIM gives engineers the tools to tackle these challenges by providing a range of solvers and toolboxes specifically tailored to match the strictest performance and accuracy requirements in an extensive range of applications. With its efficient signal processing and powerful test automation capabilities, HYPERSIM helps engineers to model their network and run accelerated simulations on their personal computer before going to real-time for large-scale Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.

we will implement our single area and two area system using HYPERSIM. Moreover, we will develop and implement algorithms and schemes for attacks and fault detection.

Benefits of the Project

Following are the benefits of this project:
1. To secure the power systems against different cyber attacks.

2. To make power system most reliable.

3. To detect any attempt of a cyber attack on the system.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

First a complete mathematical model along with observer of a cyber-physical system is designed on simulation software "LabVIEW". After performing and verifying its normal operation, different types of cyber-attacks are introduced and observed the change in behavior due to attacks. After that, different implementation schemes are designed to detect such cyber attacks on the system.
For hardware system, we use Opral-RT hardware for Real-Time simulation but we need a smart rely for emulating effects.
