Project Summary

Warfarin is a compound of significant medical importance. Over the last 40 years, thousands have used it to prevent strokes, heart attacks, clots in the legs (deep venous thrombosis), clots in lungs (pulmonary emboli), and other disorders.

Warfarin is one of several types of medications that "thin" the blood. That is, they oppose the tendency of the blood to form clots. Warfarin is often prescribed to prevent blood clots in people with certain heart conditions or other serious diseases. Getting the right starting dose can be tricky because people vary in their responses to the drug. A patient taking too high a dose may begin bleeding. If the dose is too low, deadly blood clots might form.

The adequate warfarin dosage for a patient is generally determined by physical plus genetic traits. Physical trails include sex, age, medical history (i.e. diabetes, hypertension etc…), tobacco use, race, and the genetic factors include mainly three genes: VKORC1, CYP2C9, and CYP4F2 but other genes are also involved.

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to eliminate the risk of prescribing the dosage of warfarin for doctors as a dose that is too high or too low can be very risky. This program will see the variation in a person’s physical and genetic traits and come up with the right dosage of warfarin for a patient individually. This is a research-based project and similar works have been conducted in many countries for their own populations, we want to conduct the research for the Pakistani population for their specific races. We will use artificial neural networks as the learning model for this project.

Project Implementation Method

The algorithm simulates the behavior of a patient taking as input both clinical and genetic factors of a patient. The research reduces the one week period of dose prescription to a matter of seconds for our own Pakistani people.

Benefits of the Project

it helps for Pakistani people to get the correct dose in the initial period for warfarin dosing. it saves human life because waiting for the patients is too risky in case of late dosing patient will have high chance to die
