Project Summary

mmWave 5G has brought a revolution in the field of communications with its large bandwidth and virtually no latency. But these small waves face huge path loss and highly directional antennae are required to compensate this. For this purpose smart antennae are required, which can actively form and steer the beam towards the intended user instead of the conventional omnidirectional pattern. This not only increases the range of a single antenna but also improves the overall coverage in a dense signal environment by reducing the interference.

The project focuses on the design and development of an experimental smart antenna which can operate at the commercial mmWave frequency band and steer its beam at a given angle, to be used for commercial applications. 

Project Objectives

Following are the main objectives of the project. 

  • Literature review of the current mmWave literature and techniques used for beam steering.
  • Design of a smart antenna and beam steering simulation.
  • Fabrication and testing of the smart antenna and beam steering demonstration.

Project Implementation Method

Following methodology is proposed for the implementation of the project.

  • To design a highly directional smart antenna, an extensive literature review is necessary for detailed knowledge or antennae and microwave devices. 
  • The next task would be understanding the softwares and their interface. Only then an antenna can be designed and optimized successfully.
  • To design an antennae at mmWave frequencies requires a suitable substrate and operating frequency. This would be done depending upon the knowledge gained from the literature review.
  • The antenna array and its phase shifter network are designed in the next stage. This is to be done using ANSYS Antenna Design Toolkit and CST Microwave Studio. This initial design would be optimized using the built in parametric sweeps for final design specification.
  • The last task would be the fabrication of final antenna design. This antenna would be tested for its actual performance along with beam steering demonstration.

  • The beam forming antenna have the potential of revolutionizing the telecommunication industry of Pakistan. 
  • The project can also be developed to improve near field communication between IOT devices.

  • Proof of concept of the smart antenna and beam steering.
  • Design of a mmWave antennae for beam steering application.
  • Simulation of the design with beam steering.
  • A working model and demonstration meeting the minimum standards of antenna specifications.
