DESIGN, CALIBERATION AND FABRICATION OF AN UBIQUITOUS MINIATURE NODE ENERGY ANALYSER AND NODE SHIELD

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

The gathering of energy data and to select the right energy KPI becomes very problematic
because the industry of energy encircle various units and sectors. Also the analysis of data
becomes complicated, as the sources are diverse, difficult to incorporate and changing
constantly. Rising demand of energy, variegation of the energy resources, necessity for real time
vision on the flows of energy are part of the many challenges the industry has to manage. To
assure low cost, high availability of power and manage loads, Energy Analytics are a beneficial
operational tool for utility sectors. Energy analytics is the procedure of collecting the electrical
data with the help of software in order to facilitate energy suppliers to investigate, supervise, and
improve energy associated KPI’s like production expenditure, production distribution, and many
more. To integrate all data sets in one central place to work on them efficiently energy analytics
software can be adopted. Thus the energy analytics platform drags the disparate data sources,
analyze the data and conceive the analyses for the simple and readily dissemination. For this
purpose we are designing a single phase Ubiquitous Energy Analyzer Module also called as
NODEM that would seamlessly integrate into any system. The mission of this project is to
fabricate the overall device extremely light and miniature in size, user friendly, easy to use and
cost efficient. The target of NODEM is to achieve the CLASS 1 efficiency defined by the IEC
standards. We will be using Arduino Nano interface for the beginning of our project and then
design an Energy Analyzer on Arduino shield. We further improve our design and implement the
setup on ESP32 platform. In this project we will make a resistive and inductive Load Bank and
by using wireless communication we transmit different load profiles. We take 4 energy meters
which are available in our market named as HIKING, ESTRON, SNOFF and Pakistani
manufacturer digital meter. We compare these four meters with NODEM and compare different
parameter like efficiency, accuracy and several others. Also unlike the normal meters NODEM is
small and miniature in size and can also measure current, voltage, power factor along with KWh.
The device which we are trying to fabricate is user friendly and would provide ease to users by
enabling easy access to data by clamping this device on any external wire.

Project Objectives

The objective of our work is to resolve the problems faced in energy analytics by introducing a device that would be capable of monitoring the required data efficiently by IEC standards and ease the work of energy analytics. For the project we have first designed an automatic load changing load bank that would simulate a daily load profile that runs in an average house. To monitor the energy data consumed by this load bank we have developed an energy monitoring system that evaluated the load through three different meters as mentioned in the below section. The purpose of designing a load bank and energy monitoring system is to help in calibration and verifying the results obtained through our fabricated  meter. Then we would design a meter that compromises in cost but not in efficiency and present it in our final delivery. The meter would be ubiquitous node that can we installed with great ease and would monitor data without any sort of failure.

Project Implementation Method

For a new and better smart energy monitoring solution we need to first establish a testing system. This comprises of two parts:

1) Design and commissioning of an automated load-bank

2) Design and commissioning of a metering rig

The load bank uses the following scheme:

Once this is completed and tested, the metering rig comprising of commercial smart energy meters shall be made according to the following plan:

The above stages shall be used to test commercial and residential energy measurement requirements. This shall result in recommendations leading to the final design, testing and production of a commercially viable energy node design NODEM.

Benefits of the Project

The main challenge faced in Energy Analytics is that different energy monitoring and analysing system are engaged which are very costly and are quite difficult to install and maintain. Furthermore, it is quite difficult to extract data and therefore installation of another system is required to fulfill this purpose. To solve this problem, we are designing an ubiquitous Energy Analyzer that would seamlessly integrate into any system. The desire is to make the overall setup cost efficient, extremely light and easy to use. Main Benefits of our projects are:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We have made an automated load bank through which we can monitor energy with the help of different metering systems. We can connect different types of loads according to the load profile of our home.To measure this loadwe have also made an energy monitoring system from which we get results with the help of 3 meters namely,

        1. Vertex electronics single phase static energy meter

         2. EASTRON single phase energy meter SDM-120-Modbus

         3. Hiking single phase energy meter DDS238-1 ZN

These meters can display voltage, current, active power and power factor etc. and the         information is fetched and gather on a single platform.

For our final assignment we will design our own meter with CLASS 1 efficiency defined by the IEC standards and compare its results with above mentioned meters. Our aim is to fabricate and design the energy analyzer on a miniature scale while keeping its accuracy as a class 1 meter of IEC standard.

After  the design gets finalized wewould perform the following tasks to complete our FYP project,

Develop the energy analyzer on a node shield(Arduino Shield) to make it user friendly
