Design and model fabrication of novel design of savonius wind turbine
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryRenewable energy sources have been researched for more than a century now. Wind energy; which is often characterized as an unreliable source of energy, is not unreliable if placed at places with smooth wind currents.Wind turbines are classified into two categories: HAWT and VAWT. This classification refers to the position of rotor axis relative to wind direction. The Savonius rotor is thus used as vertical axis wind turbine like the other Darrieus rotor. S-Rotors or Savonius rotors have been employed as VAWT widely in the previous decades. Savonius rotor as Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) can be used as a standalone power generation device because of its low cost, low cut-in speed and the fact that it can accept wind from any direction. S-Rotors when compared to other types of rotors have a lower Power Coefficient but factors like Overlap ratio, Aspect Ratio, Number of Blades and Blade shapes can affect its efficiency.
Project ObjectivesMain objective is to design and manufacture a wind turbine that can be installed in areas wind low wind speed. one can get electrical power with the renewable free source of energy :air. Air will be used to drive this vertical axis wind turbine and this rotary motion wil be used to drive a motor to produce cheap electricity,
Project Implementation MethodOur aim is to devolope a VAWT (vertical axis wind turbine) to achieve maximum effieciency. Working for the green energy and sustainable growth we are devolping this wind powered turbine to get free and green electricity. For this research have been initiated and a plan has been made to get knowledge about the how to increase efficiency of this turbine. Designing of CAD model has been done .Estimated price ihas been calculated. After completing the fabrication we will do experiment work and will notice different resuts based on our calculations.Design changes will be done if necessary,Analyze the project data by comparing experimental and theoretical values. Then we will gather feedback about the project by practically installing this turbine and then will finalize the final report of project.
Benefits of the ProjectThere are two kinds of wind turbines according to the axis of rotation to the ground, horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). VAWTs include both a drag type configuration like Savonius wind turbine and a lift-type configuration like Darrieus wind turbine. Savonius wind rotor has many advantages over others in that its construction is simpler and cheaper. It is independent of the wind direction and has a good starting torque at lower wind speeds. The experimental study conducted in this paper aims to investigate the effect of number of blades on the performance of the model of Savonius type wind turbine. The experiments used to compare 2, 3, and 4 blades wind turbines to show tip speed ratio, torque and power coefficient related with wind speed. A simulation using ANSYS 13.0 software will show pressure distribution of wind turbine. The results of study showed that number of blades influence the performance of wind turbine. Savonius model with three blades has the best performance at high tip speed ratio. The highest tip speed ratio is 0.555 for wind speed of 7 m/s.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableOur goal is to design the blades of this S type vertical axis wind turbine to get maximum output. For this we are working on design of blades to be different from typical turbine. We will cut the blade in half and then join them atan angle. The advantage of doing this is when the air will strike at the edges of the blade then these edges will be open to be flat and then they will go to thier original position. We are installing guide veins or grooves in the blades so that when air strikes it tend to bend in those grooves and make an impact to force out the blade to move. This will help us to get maximumize the power generation .
